Victoria Falls Trips
A World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Victoria Falls are indeed one of the world’s greatest geographical sights; the moment you arrive in the town and hear the roar and see the ‘smoke that thunders’ rise almost 500 m skywards. Here the smooth-flowing Zambezi River changes character and plunges into the Batoka Gorge in a profusion of white water. The energy and power of the water crashing into the gorge below is a truly spectacular sight.
The falls are 1.7 km wide and nearly 550 million litres of water cascade into the chasm below every minute during the Zambezi River’s peak high-water flow. With a drop of 100 m, Victoria Falls is roughly three times the height of America’s Niagara Falls and well over twice the width of the Horseshoe Falls. The only rival in height and width are South America’s Iguazú Falls.
It is just as enticing above the falls on the Upper Zambezi, with its palm-dotted islands and array of game. Sunset cruises and canoeing on the Upper Zambezi take you among hippos and crocodiles, or you can take an elephant ride, walking safari or hose trail in the surrounding national parks and wilderness.
