Boat Journeys in Ecuador

A boat journey around the Galapagos is considered one of the most rewarding boat journeys in the world and for good reason. The Galapagos is the world’s second biggest marine reserve; it has been named a whale sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biosphere reserve. As the islands have never been connected with a continent, over the millennia the plants and animals here have developed differently to their continental ancestors as they have adapted to the conditions and environment of the Galapagos.

Additional information

Noteworthy wildlife includes marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, Galapagos penguins and giant tortoises. Because of the fact that almost half the visitor sites are marine sites, one of the best ways to experience the Galapagos is on a boat. A cruise takes in the land sites as well as spending time at the marine sites to snorkel and spot marine wildlife.

Although the Galapagos Islands are by far the most famous boat journey in Ecuador, there are other opportunities for boat journeys in Ecuador. Isla de la Plata is a small island just over an hour’s boat trip from the mainland and contains a large diversity of animal species including several species of booby and the South American sea lion.

Finally, the Amazon can be explored by riverboat. Amazon boat journeys often travel around the Limoncocha Wildlife Reserve and Yasuni National Park, Ecuador’s largest protected animal reserve.
