Country Information

Throughout Albania the rugged mountain landscapes are dramatic with soaring limestone peaks looming above alpine pastures and wooded valleys. You can cycle through these remote mountains and past tiny hamlets and villages, where foreigners are rarely seen and time seems to have stood still. A third of the territory of Albania is covered by forest and home to a wide range of mammals including wolves and bears.

Albania is a compact cycle destination at only 29000 square kilometres with a strikingly beautiful and sparsely inhabited coastline. The road infrastructure has improved in recent years and many cycle routes are paved.

The mountainous south is home to UNESCO sites and Ottoman archaeological ruins, where you can cycle on paved roads through the magnificent canyon of Osumi and gorges and along the Albanian Riviera. The highest peaks are found in the north close to the Montenegro and Kosovo borders – an area known as the Albanian Alps.
