Cycling in Austria

A cycle adventure in Austria is sure to feature superb scenery, fairy tale villages and a wealth of history and culture. From the River Danube to the dramatic mountain scenery of the Alps there are a variety of cycle trips to choose from and Austria has an excellent cycle path network that helps you pedal in peace away from traffic. Despite Austria’s largely mountainous terrain many of the cycle routes are relatively easy and undemanding, particularly those along the dedicated cycle tracks that skirt lakes or follow the gentle course of a river. With three quarters of the country in the Alps it is also possible to find more demanding cycle routes.

Austria’s past as a European power is reflected in its impressive architecture and various contributions to art, most notably music with a long list of famous composers. In addition Austria produces fine wines and excellent beers.

Additional information

Thanks to its strategic location, a cycling holiday in Austria can easily be combined with the surrounding countries and many bike routes follow the course of a river or the shores of a lake across borders.

The River Danube is Europe’s second largest river and has become one of the most iconic and famous cycle routes passing through numerous historical cities, four central European capitals and ten countries. Now peaceful, the Danube once formed a long-standing frontier for the Roman Empire. From the Black Forest in Germany to the Black Sea in Romania the Danube measures nearly 3000 kilometres in length and it is possible to return time and again to cycle different sections or combine a bike ride with river cruising. In Austria you could ride along the banks of the Danube from Passau, past imposing castles, glorious abbeys and the wine growing region of Wachau to Vienna. Beyond Vienna you can cycle alongside the Danube to Bratislava in Slovakia and on to Budapest in Hungary.

Set deep in the Alps and surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of Austria, Germany and Switzerland is Lake Constance. Well suited to a cycling holiday for superb views and easy going cycle routes, Lake Constance also has a rich history as reflected in its villages and castles.

The Austrian Lake District is located near the fairy tale city of Salzburg and is perfect for a cycling holiday for those wanting to combine scenery and relatively easy going riding. Also known as ‘Sound of Music’ country, or locally as the Salzkammergut, you can pedal along quiet lakeshores on designated cycle tracks with a backdrop of dramatic Alpine scenery. Stop off at idyllic villages or for a swim in the crystal clear waters along the way.

From Innsbruck, deep in the Austrian Tyrol it is possible to follow cycle routes either north along the River Inn through Bavaria or south and into the Italian Alps and Lake Garda.
