Cycling in Estonia

Estonia’s low traffic levels and relatively flat terrain make it an ideal cycling destination for those interested in a leisurely ride combined with medieval towns, coastal scenery, forested national parks and a rich cultural history. Located on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea just across the gulf from Finland it is recognised as the wealthiest and most developed of the former soviet states, sometimes referred to as a ‘Baltic Tiger’.

Country Information

Cosmopolitan Tallinn is the jewel in Estonia’s crown and a true highlight on any cycling trip of Estonia. The city walls offer various viewpoints that overlook the compact medieval city and are great places to take in the sunset. Despite being subject to centuries of foreign rule, most recently as part of the Soviet Union, the Estonian nation has proudly maintained its identity through language, culture and music and gone on to become one Europe’s strongest economies.

Lahemaa National Park, close to the capital Tallinn, is best explored on two wheels as you pedal through an interesting mix of dense forest, coastal bluffs, ancient bogs, 18th century manor houses, fishing villages and numerous lakes, rivers and waterfalls.

Estonia is culturally and historically very closely tied with Latvia and many cyclists combine the two countries along with Lithuania. Each country complements the other and the short distances make a cycle trip of the three Baltic countries an interesting proposition.
