The Baltic seacoast is marked by spits, coastal lakes and dunes which contrast with the mountainous region of the south. The central plains are dominated by the Vistula and Oder Rivers which drain into the Baltic. Further south the mountains rise to form natural barriers to neighbouring countries. The highest part of the Carpathian Mountains are the Tatra Mountains along the southern border.
Cycling in the Beskid Mountains bordering Slovakia takes in the picturesque Dunajec Gorge and the medieval towns of Stary Sacz and Nowy Sacz.
