Family Holidays in Borneo

Most families travelling to Borneo head for the northern half of the island, to Sarawak and Sabah, two provinces that are part of Malaysia.

Borneo’s fascinating wildlife is a real draw for adults and children alike and many unusual species of plants and animals evolved in its rainforests which are some of the planet’s oldest. The jungle here is home to one of Borneo’s most famous animals, the shy and gentle orang-utan. No holiday here would be complete without a visit to the Sepilok rehabilitation centre, where orphaned and injured animals are brought to recuperate and where you can watch these lovable creatures in their natural habitat. Feeding time is the best time for your family to visit. Other popular locations for wildlife spotting are along the waterways of the Kinabatangan, where proboscis monkeys and myriad birds can be seen, and the warm seas off Borneo and its smaller islands which are teeming with marine life.

Country Information

Mount Kinabalu (4095 m) is South-east Asia’s highest peak, which active and fit families may like to take up the challenge to climb over two days. Whitewater rafting and mountain biking are two other activities that can also be enjoyed on land, whilst on the coast the warm seas are great for swimming, diving and snorkelling. Or you could try something different such as a family sea kayaking adventure.

Borneo’s rich tribal culture should also be experienced. There are a number of homestays where your family can spend a night or two living alongside the locals making for a warm and memorable cultural encounter.
