Family Holidays in Cuba

Cuba has much more to offer adventurous families than the typical Caribbean island holiday. As well as palm-fringed, golden sand beaches and warm turquoise seas, it has a unique history and culture, colonial towns with elegant if decaying architecture, with plenty of exciting activities and diverse landscapes to enjoy.

Havana is a fascinating city. Once the haunt of the rich and famous, crumbling elegant colonial and art-deco buildings look down over the streets while the ubiquitous old American cars cruise past. Riding through the streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site in a classic 1950s car is a highlight for many visitors.

Trinidad is another interesting colonial town and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of the stylish buildings in the centre were built during the success of the 18th and 19th century sugar trade. The maze of cobbled streets are said to have been deliberated planned so as to confuse pirates. Outside Trinidad are golden sand beaches, perfect for some down time combined with local culture.

Country Information

Most children love camping and an ideal place for this is the tropical forests of Topes de Collantes in the hills above Trinidad. Here there are several haciendas (farmsteads) that open their doors and allow visitors to either camp in their grounds or sleep on their verandahs. The haciendas are accessed by trails through the forest making for a great adventure.

Vinales in the west of the island is also an interesting area to visit. Here the fields that grow the tobacco for the famous Cuban cigars are overlooked by mogotes, huge limestone outcrops. This is a beautiful area for walking.

What makes Cuba truly unique however are its people. Despite what many would see as the constraints of living under the legacy of the Cuban Revolution, the local culture is friendly, colourful and loud. Music is everywhere particular at night and dancing is actively encouraged. For those that are old enough the local rum based cocktails are also very good.

With its unique culture, beautiful landscapes and friendly people, Cuba is an exciting and rewarding place to take a family holiday.
