Family Holidays in Italy

Whether it’s a multi-active adventure or a more relaxing break that you and your family are after, a holiday in Italy is hard to beat.

The landscapes of Italy vary from the high mountains of the Alps in the far north and the Apennines range that runs along its spine, to the seemingly endless and scenic coastline of rocky coves, small fishing villages and beaches. This variety creates a perfect playground for active families wanting to spend their holidays ‘on the go’. From trekking, rock climbing and mountain biking to whitewater rafting and sea kayaking, Italy offers all the elements for an energetic and adrenalin charging multi-activity holiday.

Italy has a fascinating and rich historical legacy and its amazing archaeological sites and perfectly preserved medieval cities are sure to bring your kids’ school history lessons to life. Popular places include the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were buried and preserved by the ash that erupted from Vesuvius in AD79, and the imposing arches of Rome’s Colosseum where you can easily imagine watching the gladiators of old.

Country Information

Eating out abroad can sometimes be a challenge for families but with pizza and pasta featuring at or near the top of most children’s favourite food lists, meals in Italy can be a real highlight. And let’s not forget that scrumptious ice cream for pudding! Some restaurants even offer the chance to get out the dough and try your hand at creating your own pizza – an activity which seems to bring out a healthy competitive streak in most families.

Boats are a popular activity on family holidays and with its stunning coastline Italy has countless opportunities to take to the water. A popular trip is to catch a hydrofoil over to the island of Capri off the stunning Amalfi coast then take a smaller boat along the shore to explore to the famous Blue Grotto. In Sicily you can visit secluded bays, caves and coves off Sicily’s north coast or catch a boat out to the Aeolian Islands.

Along with the dinosaurs and space, volcanoes are a source of fascination for young minds and in Italy you can take your kids to see a real one! Mount Vesuvius overlooks the bay of Naples and is the only volcano the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years. Sicily’s Mount Etna is in an almost constant state of activity. The most popular route up to the crater is by cable car followed by four-wheel drive and then on foot to the 2920 metre summit.

Add a warm and sunny Mediterranean climate and the vibrant and friendly Italians as ingredients into the mix and Italy is quite simply one of the best destinations for a family holiday.
