Family Holidays in Turkey

Turkey is a fascinating country with a reputation for great hospitality, and for being very family orientated. It is also gaining a reputation for adventure travel. This combination of child-friendly activities and a family-friendly culture make it a great destination for families looking for something different from a traditional sun and beach holiday.  Due to its unique position between Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Turkey also has an impressive history, a rich culture and wonderful food.  It also has a huge range of beautiful landscapes and sites of geological interest, so there is a lot for families to discover and explore.

If you have more than a passing interest in history Turkey has some world class archaeological sites that may also appeal to your family: the theatre and Roman houses at Ephesus, the stadium at Aphrodisias, and Sultanahmet (‘Old Istanbul’) to name a few. However also be alert to local sites that may appeal to children such as Patara, birthplace of Saint Nicholas (Father Christmas), which is next to a sweeping, white sand beach.

While most families tend to stay around the Turquoise Coast, adventurous families may also enjoy discovering the bustle of Istanbul, exploring the unique landscape of ‘fairy chimneys’ and rock cut churches in Cappadocia, or camping in the Taurus Mountains.

Food can often be a challenge when travelling with children. However the simple yet tasty home style of much Turkish cooking and the adaptability of most cooks should ensure that your children’s needs are met, while allowing you to enjoy the many exciting flavours of traditional Turkish food.

Country Information

Due to its geography Turkey has several climatic regions, however generally the best time to visit is between April and November. Like other areas in the Southern Mediterranean the summer months can be particularly hot, but if you keep in the shade in the middle of the day where possible, generally protect yourselves from the sun and keep hydrated, you will all have a great family holiday.

Boat trips appeal to children of all ages. From day trips meandering through the reed beds in Dalyan on the way to Iztuzu Beach or sailing around the stunning Bay of Kekova, to a week cruising the Turquoise Coast on a traditional style wooden gulet, there are plenty of opportunities to spend time on boats in Turkey. With the Lycian style rock tombs at Dalyan, sunken city ruins in Kekova and scattered archaeological sites along the Turquoise Coast there is also the opportunity to combine fun on boats with some fascinating ancient history.

Water sports are also popular, and depending on the child’s age opportunities include canoeing, sea kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving.
