South America is a fantastic destination for solo travellers with a sense of adventure, thanks to its number of diverse countries and cultures, and fascinating and influential history. It is this history that has cultivated much of South America’s most famous sights, but travellers will also find themselves enjoying the natural wonders and wildlife that this amazing part of the world has to offer.

As there is so much to see and do across South America’s various countries, Explore ensure that all travel and border crossing is taken care of when you book your tour. Travellers are encouraged to stay within their groups and follow tour guides closely when visiting popular sites, cities and rural areas for a fully immersive experience and should keep belongings safe and secure on long, active treks.

As some vaccines and preventative healthcare may be required in certain countries, all travellers are advised to consult with their GP at least six weeks prior to their trip to receive advice and arrange any necessary vaccinations or medication.

Additional information

The sun-drenched coastlines and mountainous landscapes of South America make it the perfect place to walk or cycle whilst taking in the natural wonders and wildlife. The Lost World tour of Venezuela is ideal for those who enjoy hiking as our Explore tour guides take you up one of the oldest geological structures on earth to enjoy spectacular views, whilst from June to December you can embark on a visit to the Angel falls.

Adventures in Patagonia is also ideal for adventurers as you view some of the most unique landscapes on earth, varying from the Tierra del Fuego national park to the Perito Moreno Glacier and UNESCO World Heritage site.

Peru’s Mighty Amazon tour is also an unmissable trek through the jungle of the world largest river which is home to countless native plants and wildlife including colourful macaws and parrots, squirrels and monkeys. The boat ride is incredibly scenic and meals are provided meaning that you can sit back, relax and watch the shore go by.

Those who prefer to view their destinations on two wheels will find enjoyment in our cycling tours which include Highlights of Cuba by Bicycle and Cycle Mexico which takes you to the Yucatan Peninsula.

South America is the birthplace of some of the world’s most fascinating ancient civilisations, and in Peru and Mexico you will find many sites dedicated to preserving the heritage of the native Inca, Maya and Aztec tribes.

The Inca Trail Trek is perhaps one of our most popular tours for solo travellers as it’s one of the many trips that journeys to the iconic Machu Picchu, an Incan temple which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Those hoping to complete their bucket list won’t be disappointed by this mysterious and fascinating site as well as Cusco, the ancient capital Inca city. Our Machu Picchu and Titicaca trip is also a great way to fit in a trek to the Inca Pilgrim Way whilst Spirits of the Incas will take you to the otherworldly Nazca lines.

Contrasts of Mexico and The Yucatan Peninsula on the other hand crosses several borders including Belize, Guatemala and Mexico to take you to the very best Aztec and Mayan sites including the Mexico City Anthropological Museum and Teotihuacan Pyramids.

The vibrant and colourful cities of South America are perfect for solo travellers to learn about each countries’ unique culture as well as presenting many opportunities to enjoy the food, music and art of the locals.

One of our most popular destinations is Cuba, with the Best of Western Cuba and Cuba Libre! tours taking solo travellers on an in-depth exploration of the country and its pre and post-colonial history. This tropical paradise, where locals drive vintage American cars through streets of pastel-hued buildings, allows a faster paced approach in exploring the glorious countryside and bustling city of Havana, before winding down with strolls along white sandy beaches of Trinidad with optional boat trips to Cayo Las Iguanas.

Those who like to stay active will also be able to capture the spirit of South America with a tour of Buenos Aires to Rio. Crossing the borders of Argentina and Brazil, solo travellers will have both guided trips and free time to enjoy the views from beautiful coastal towns, colonial architecture and the naturally stunning Iguazu waterfalls. First time visitors should also be sure to catch a glimpse of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue which overlooks the lively capital of Rio.

Ecuador Discovery is also a fantastic option for exploring the ‘Avenue of Volcanos’ which presents a picturesque view of the countries’ unique natural landscape. The Otavalo Indian market and Andean capital of Quito are also must-sees with awe-inspiring panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains.
