Rail Journeys in Asia

One of the best ways to travel through the world’s largest continent is by train. There are thousands of kilometres of track to explore, varied landscapes to pass through and busy stations perfect for people watching as you wait for your train to depart, not to mention the amazing array of snacks and drinks on offer on many trains in Asia.

Journeys vary from the epic Trans-Siberian, which runs more than 10000 kilometres from Moscow to Beijing, travelling north to south on Vietnam’s Reunification Express line or relaxing on a simple overnight sleeper train that will whisk you from Beijing to Xian and beyond. For a spot of luxury the Eastern and Orient Express offers a variety of routes through south-east Asia.  There are also examples of incredible feats of engineering throughout the region. In Japan the bullet trains, the Shinkansen, combine phenomenal high-speeds with impeccable punctuality. In China the Qinghai-Tibet railway, which links Beijing with Lhasa in Tibet, conquers the issues of high altitude construction.

One of the best reasons to travel by train in Asia is to experience local life. In most regions train travel is significantly cheaper than air travel and as such you will be sharing your journey with families and other travellers all with their own story to tell. From the bustle of an Indian train station, to sharing some snacks with your fellow cabin mates on a sleeper train, it is the perfect opportunity to make some new friends whilst you watch the scenery drift by.
