Rail Journeys in Europe

Train travel have come a long way since the invention of the steam engine in England in the 19th century, and today sees an extensive rail network covering Europe, with modern high speed rail passenger networks throughout France and Spain and of course the Channel Tunnel linking the UK with the continent. Yet rail journeys have retained a timeless charm and a certain romance that for some make it an irresistible way to travel.

With Europe having such a rich diversity of scenery and cultures within relatively short distances, travelling by train throughout the region is incredibly satisfying. Passengers can sit back and relax watching the scenery through the windows whilst enjoying the rhythm of the train on the track.

Classic journeys though Norway on the scenic Raumabanen Railway and iconic Flam Railway reward travellers with splendid views of deep blue fjords and ice-capped mountains. Visitors to Spain can enjoy the narrow gauge trains of the northern Basque country  and Cantabria as they journey along, afforded with the superb panoramas of the Picos de Europa mountains and the spectacular coastline of the Bay of Biscay. Whilst further south, trains across the Andalucian landscape link Moorish cities across rolling hills, dotted with traditional white-washed rural villages.

Whilst not always the fastest way to travel, rail journeys certainly sum up the adage ‘it’s the journey, not the destination’.
