Rail Journeys in Spain

The narrow gauge railway network of northern Spain is a must for any train enthusiast, or  for travellers who simply want to enjoy a region using a traditional form of transport. Crossing the Basque region and Cantabria, the scenery changes from the dramatic Picos de Europa mountains, where funiculars provide crucial links to remote mountain villages, to the rugged coastline of the Bay of Biscay.

En route visits can be made to several historic towns and cities including Santiago de Compostela, the final destination of the legendary Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route; Leon, boasting its great Gothic Cathedral and splendid Romanesque Basilica; and Bilabo, home of the extraordinary Guggenheim Museum.

Comfortable historic hotels known as Paradors, that were once buildings such as mansions, monasteries and castles, abound throughout the region and add to the overall experience for those who want to really treat themselves.

With the opportunity to also ride a historic steam train located at the Basque Railway Museum, all romantic notions of train travel will, without doubt, be satisfied.
