Frequently asked questions about solo travel

First time on a group holiday as a solo traveller? We've answered the top questions about travelling solo an Explore tour:

Will I need to pay more to travel on a tour on my own?
No, there is no extra cost for solo travellers on our tours. The only extra cost is the single room option - see the next question.

How does the rooming work as a single traveller?
Included in our trip price as standard is a bed in a twin room, which you would share with another person in your group of the same sex. There may be occasions when you'd share with larger numbers of people, for example in a home stay with multiple beds in one room, but this will always be stated on the trip itinerary.

You can choose to pay an additional cost for our single room option (single supplement), to get a room to yourself. This is available on most of our trips but may not apply to all nights - check the trip itinerary, where we state which nights have single room options.

Will I get time to myself on an Explore tour?
This depends on the trip, but you will most likely get time to yourself as we always try to build in free time into our itineraries. Check the itinerary on the trip page where we detail the plan for each day, including available free time.

Are there evening activities on the Explore tours?
Typically we leave the evenings free on our tours, so you can enjoy free time to do whatever you choose. Your tour leader will be on hand to recommend local restaurants and things to do, and can organise bookings for you. It's up to you whether you eat with your whole group, in smaller groups or on your own.

Some trips have evening activities, for example a meal with locals in a home stay or a sunset boat ride. Check the trip page for a day-to-day breakdown of included meals and activities.

How big are group sizes on Explore tours?
The group size ranges from between 6 to 20 people, depending on the type of trip, the transport and accommodation used and activities included. We rarely have groups that are smaller than five or six people or larger than 16, and the average is 12 people plus an Explore tour leader.

What is it really like joining a group trip on your own?
Our groups are small, informal, welcoming and fun. Most people joining an explore group for the first time are surprised how quickly and easily the group gels. There’s no pressure to join in the whole time: you can be as involved or independent as you like.

It doesn't matter that you're travelling without a friend or partner, on our small group tours you'll have other like-minded people with you to share the experience. We typically find that around half of our groups are made up of solo travellers, so other people will be feeling the same as you, increasing your changes of bonding as a group. We recommend joining the group for mealtimes and on optional excursions, as it's a great way to get to know your fellow travellers, learn what you've got in common and potentially build new friendships.

Will I be safe as a female travelling solo?
Yes, our customers' safety is our number one priority, so you'll be safe travelling with us. Being with a group is a sure way to stay safe, and our tour leader will also be with you to watch out for the whole group. Being local, they will be able to advise you on local customs and etiquette, common phrases and what to look out for.

And in the unlikely event that something unexpected should happen before or during your trip, we pride ourselves on our swift and efficient response, so you can be assured we'll look after you.

Can I travel solo even if I’m not single?
Of course! People travel solo with us for all sorts of reasons, not just because they're single. So if you're partner isn't able to join you on your trip, or isn't up for travelling, you'll still be in great company.
