New Zealand is a small country but contains extremely varied topography; from mountains to rivers to lakes to glaciers to volcanoes and so on. New Zealand has 18 peaks over 3000 metres, the highest being Mount Cook (3754 m). It is an exceptionally beautiful country, therefore one of the best ways to explore its beauty is on foot.
New Zealand has nine ‘Great Walks’ which are on well-maintained tracks and showcase some of the best scenery in the country. Included in this list are the Abel Tasman Coast Track, the Kepler Track and the Milford Track.
Recognised as one of the best countries in the world for walking, Lonely Planet includes the Routeburn Track in the South Island in their list of ‘top 10 treks in the world’ and Wanderlust mentions the Tongariro Crossing in the North Island in their list of ‘best day hikes in the world’.
