Experiences Walking and Trekking Walking in Europe Walking in Albania

Walking in Albania

Albania is home to some of the most spectacular – and least trekked – mountains in Europe. At just 29000 square kilometres it is a small country, but 70% is mountainous and ideal for trekking. The fiercely independent Albanian people are defined by their geography, with mountainous frontiers on all sides.

Despite its size Albania has extremely rich biological diversity. The variation of climate and terrain between the Mediterranean west and the mountainous inland regions has given rise to a large number of endemic and sub-endemic species. In particular the wild flowers in early summer are remarkable.

Country Information

Throughout Albania the mountain landscapes are rugged and dramatic, often with soaring limestone walls rising from alpine pastures and wooded valleys. You can trek among these remote mountains and through tiny hamlets and villages, where foreigners are rarely seen and time seems to have stood still.
