Walking in Croatia

With its dramatic coastline and soaring limestone mountains Croatia is regarded as one of Europe’s finest trekking regions. Conditions are just right for walkers and trekkers in the spring and autumn months, with warm and sunny days tempered by cool breezes from the Adriatic.

One of the finest regions for hiking is among the limestone hills and azure-coloured lakes of Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here a series of beautiful waterfalls connect the sixteen lakes, which have been formed over centuries by natural ‘travertine’ dams. The area is rich in flora and wildlife, including several endemic species.

Another exhilarating region for trekkers is among the sheer sided karst limestone canyons of Paklenica National Park. The park has 200 kilometres of hiking trails, the most dramatic of which follows the Velika Paklenica Gorge. As you walk between the soaring 700 metre high cliffs the canyon floor closes to just 50 metres at its narrowest point.
