Experiences Walking and Trekking Walking in Europe Walking in Cyprus

Walking in Cyprus

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, in terms of both area and population. Since the ‘separation’ of 1974, when Turkey invaded the northern part of the island, Cyprus has been divided between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. There are wonderful walking and trekking trails in both halves of the island.

The geography of Cyprus is dominated by the Troodos Mountains in the southwest and the smaller Kyrenia Range stretching along the north coast. In the Troodos you can trek among fragrant cedar and pine forests, through groves of almonds and cherries, past terraced vineyards clinging to the rocky slopes and centuries-old Byzantine monasteries. In Northern Cyprus the best hiking trails are in the rocky hills of the Kyrenia Range. Here you can walk between a number of Crusader castles, including Buffavento and Kantara, spectacularly located overlooking the coastal plains.

Whether in the north or south of the island, hikers can be sure of a warm welcome and generous hospitality from their hosts.
