Walking in Portugal

Portugal offers many regions for walking and trekking holidays, but none more popular than its two autonomous regions: the Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores.

Both are oases of fertile, green land surrounded by the ocean, and both offer superb walking with varied topography, fascinating local history, remarkable flora and fauna and climates mild enough to trek almost year round. Madeira’s network of ‘levada’ trails, which follow the course of centuries-old aqueducts, enable hikers to contour the steep mountain slopes with panoramic views over the valleys and shoreline below.

In the volcanic Azores archipelago you can hike on any of the nine islands, each of which has its own distinct topography, character and even climate. Here you can walk to hot springs, crater lakes,  green forests, gorges and craggy coastline as well as cultivated agricultural areas. Island hopping by boat affords the added benefit of dolphin and whale watching.
