Experiences Walking and Trekking Walking in South America Walking in Peru

Walking in Peru

The most famous trek in Peru, in fact in the whole of South America, is the Inca Trail. First opened for walkers in 1970, the Inca Trail is the most famous and dramatic way to arrive at the Inca city of Machu Picchu. The total distance is only 43 kilometres but takes four days to walk as the ancient trail laid out by the Incas winds its way up and down the mountains, tackling three passes en route.

Located in the Andes mountain range, the trail passes through a variety of Andean environments including cloud forest and alpine tundra. You will marvel at the exotic flowers, spectacular vistas and Inca ruins that you pass along the way before being rewarded with your first view of majestic Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate.

Additional information

Walking in Peru
For trekkers who want to do the Inca trail but prefer more of a challenge then the extended Inca trail past Mount Salkantay is perfect. This little trodden route traverses stunning high mountain scenery.

Hikers who want to get off the beaten track and escape to a part of Peru that has changed little over the last 500 years can trek through the spectacular scenery of the Lares Valley. This trek is a unique experience, through a splendid landscape of snow-capped mountains and passing through isolated villages that have preserved their traditional techniques of weaving and dress making.

One of the most interesting but lesser known treks in Peru is the route to Choquequirao. Known as ‘Machu Picchu’s sacred sister’, this vast Inca complex is accessible only by foot and is surrounded by spectacular snow-capped peaks.
