Tourism in Nicaragua is relatively new and large scale tourism doesn’t exist, so a holiday here will give you a genuine insight into the country and its warm, welcoming people. Nicaragua also has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, especially outside the capital Managua, and is family-centred, so perfect for an adventurous family holiday.

A highlight of any family holiday to Nicaragua will be Ometepe Island. This relaxed island is set in the vast lake that takes the country’s name (Lake Nicaragua) and is formed by two classic cone-shaped volcanoes, one of which (Concepcion) is still active. The island supports both dry tropical forest and rainforest and in 2010 was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. With patience you can see many colourful bird species and curious  monkeys in the treetops.

Making the most of its backdrop of lakes, volcanoes and tropical forests Nicaragua is also developing family-friendly adventure activities. Although only in its early days, depending on the age of your children you can go scree running down a volcano, zip wiring through a forest and kayaking on a lake. You can also enjoy the unspoilt sand beaches along Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, a great spot to learn how to surf; by contrast the Corn Islands in the Caribbean Sea are perfect for snorkelling and diving – or just relaxing under a palm tree in a hammock.

Nicaragua is a great destination for families who want an adventure.
