With its warm climate, beautiful beaches, inviting blue sea and slow pace of life Greece seems to have all the ingredients for a relaxing family holiday. However Greece and its islands has still more to offer, including picture postcard villages, local tavernas serving delicious food and ubiquitous ancient ruins to discover.

Most family holidays in Greece are based around water. Swimming usually features highly whether in a swimming pool or from a beach. Snorkelling and searching out rock pools in rocky bays are also popular, as are water sports. Depending on your child’s age other opportunities may include sea kayaking, sailing and scuba-diving.

Boat trips also make a good family day out and as Greece is a nation of sailors there are usually plenty to choose from. Most explore the local coastline, stopping for regular swimming and snorkelling stops. For those that wish to explore further by sea there are also sailing boats that take week cruises around an area.

Standards of these boats vary from simple to luxury, but all provide a relaxing way to discover the Greek Islands. As well as swimming stops, you will also be encouraged to discover local historical sites, view points and landmarks. Most boat trips stop at tavernas in small villages and harbours, so that you can try the flavoursome local food.

Food in Greece is generally simple and tasty, so it shouldn’t be hard to find things that even the fussiest child will eat. Eating is usually al fresco in the summer and the Greeks are very family-orientated, so eating out should be a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Most family holidays tend to be based in a beach resort, however adventurous families may also enjoy visiting different islands, or exploring the historical sites of Athens.

Greece enjoys a southern Mediterranean climate and is best visited between May and October. Like other areas in the region the summer months can be particularly hot in the summer months. However if you stay in the shade in the middle of the day as much as possible, protect yourselves from the sun and keep hydrated, you will all have a great and enjoyable holiday.
