Nestled between Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and Russia this compact Baltic nation has many attractions. Riga - its capital city – has been given UNESCO World Heritage status; it has one of the largest collections of art nouveau buildings in the world and its centre dates back to medieval times. Riga’s Dome Cathedral is renowned for its giant organ and acoustics.

Latvia is also blessed with several impressive old castles. The tower at the 13th century Turaida Castle looks like it has come straight out of the Rapunzel fairy-tale! The neo-gothic tower of Sigulda Castle is equally impressive.

Latvia became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991 but it wasn’t until 2003 that the Latvians discovered the secret nuclear bunker that had been built near Ligatne. A refuge for KGB and Latvian Soviet government officials in the event of a nuclear war, the site is now open to visitors. Containing most of the original furniture and fittings, it’s easy to imagine what it might have been like if an extended stay had become necessary!

The Baltic coast is blessed with many sandy beaches – ideal for a bit of rest and relaxation. Alternatively, the Sigulda Adventure Park ‘Tarzans’ is the largest in the Baltics. With facilities including a toboggan track, catapult, climbing wall, gigantic Tarzan swing, tube slides and bungee trampolines, this is a great place to burn off excess energy and have loads of fun.
