Africa has a history older than anywhere else on earth and is believed by many to be the birthplace of mankind. In Tanzania at Oldupai Gorge and Sterkfontein in South Africa hominid remains have been found dating back around three and a half million years. In Ethiopia’s Awash Valley even older remains believed to date back five million years have been unearthed.

Egypt was home to one of the great ancient civilisations, from whom we have learnt much, including how to make paper, keep written records and many farming techniques. The pharaohs left behind monuments that paint a picture of a thriving empire including the Sphinx and Pyramids at Giza, the Valley of the Kings, and the temples at Luxor and Abu Simbel amongst many more.

Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa, and one of the oldest in the world. There are many important Christian historical sites such as the rock hewn churches in Lalibela. At Gondar you can see the magnificent 17th century castles that have earned the area its name as the African Camelot. Axum is reputed to be the home of the Ark of the Covenant, and here you can also see the remains of the Queen of Sheba’s palace.

This is just a snapshot of the rich history that the continent has to offer, but there is much more to see and learn. You can join a tour led by a specialist expert whose knowledge and passion will bring the history to life, with in depth lectures and discussions to add to your understanding and appreciation of the region.
