Our trip begins at Heraklion Airport (HER) at 4.00pm in the arrivals hall. If you would like to join the complimentary airport transfer today, the latest your flight can arrive is 3.30pm. Your tour leader will be waiting in the hall with a branded signboard at the exit doors from the immigration/luggage retrieval area. Please be aware that they may be waiting to greet both customers whose flight has just arrived as well as those who arrived earlier, so they may be looking in a different direction to the one you're approaching from. After meeting up we will then travel together as a group (50 kilometre/31 miles, approximately 1 hour) to our hotel for the night in Zaros in the rugged Idi Mountains. After check in the Leader will organise timings for the welcome meeting, and a group meal for those interested. Zaros is a charming village located at the foothills of Mount Psiloritis. It's known for its natural beauty, including the nearby freshwater Lake Zaros, which is a popular spot to enjoying the serene atmosphere. The village is also famous for its bottled spring water, sourced from the local springs and its traditional products, including olive oil, honey, and local herbs. Here you can enjoy authentic Cretan cuisine, featuring fresh local produce, in one of its tavernas.

Suitability
Is this the trip for you?
- From mouth-watering moussaka to tasty dolmades and plates piled high with meze, Greece is a haven for foodies. This trip caters for vegans and vegetarians and there are meat options available as well. Some included meals are fish or meat based, alternatives will be offered.
- Greek breakfasts are often light, so our hotel buffets will usually consist of a variation of yoghurts, cereals, bread, jam and fresh fruits. That being said, aside from breakfast, Greek cuisine is second- to-none and there'll be plenty of opportunities to dig into gyros, Greek baklava and koulouri.
- To fully immerse ourselves in the wonders of Greece, we'll keep to a daily schedule. Our plan includes use of public ferries, including the overnight ferry from Crete to Athens. Greek ferries are generally very efficient and have good amenities, though occasional minor delays are to be expected, as with any public transportation system.
- Due to the nature of a lot of accommodation on the islands, there are no lifts and generally no porters. You'll need to be able to carry your own luggage up to your room in hotels so make sure you don't pack more than you can manage.
- Although this is a discovery tour, many of Greece's sites do involve quite a bit of walking and by nature, Athens is a hilly city. You'll need to be comfortable walking unassisted on cobbled surfaces, steady on your feet, and prepared to navigate uneven terrain. Some sites we'll visit are often exposed to the elements and don't offer much shade, so while we aim to avoid visiting during the hottest part of the day, we recommend bringing a hat and a water bottle. Shoes with good grip and ankle support are also advisable.
