Chislehurst, Kent
I loved this tour. We travelled on local buses and overnight trains and used the metro in Shanghai, no tour bus here. As such it was hard work at times. Our excellent tour leader took us to good value Chinese restaurants, ordering a great spread of delicious dishes. The optional evening shows in Beijing, Xian and Shanghai were spectacular and well worth the money. The itinerary covered the major sights and cities in a good value package. Be aware though that no meals are included so this plus optional activities add to the overall cost of the trip.

My daughter (16) and I had a wonderful trip through China. Frank was a fantastic guide who enabled was to see and learn about the real China and gave us confidence to sometimes travel around on our own. Our highlights were the food, The Great Wall of China and Xian city. Being August it was sometimes unbearably hot. The hotels got better towards the end of the tour. We added a trip to Hong Kong at the end of the tour which worked really well.

Would be better if everything wasn't "optional" as the vast majority of people want to do everything. Budgeting becomes difficult when lots of "optional" things are proposed, especially if unexpected like the shows. The experience was amazing so I would suggest including all activities, or at least listing them with indicative costs. Also listing options where there isn't time is misleading. Better to set out an itinerary that is doable! With these changes I would definitely recommend the tour. Loved China and the things we covered!

A great trip led by an efficient, knowledgeable, interesting and warm tour leader. I felt as though I have seen a small part of the 'real' China. I would suggest that the majority of the 'optional' site seeing is included and paid for in the main holiday. As it was the group of 6 all went on the offered activities which meant having a significant amount of cash available (if you include meals etc). I did ask about ATMs and it was suggested that we take cash which can be a concern when you are carrying £500 or so around with you. Although it was classed as 'busy' I think I would extend the holiday by 2 days to give more 'down' time and it would still be fairly busy but not hectic! The first hotel although great location was only OK, the rest were good or great.

This trip is excellent for hitting the highlights of China. You can see the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army and visit Shanghai in only a handful of days. It's perfect for people with a limited number of days.

Top tips:

Money for China always comes in 100 yen notes in the UK, break a note immediately upon arrival, as you'll need one yen notes for bottles of water and the local bus.

Do visit the Muslim Quarter street market in Xi'an.

Expect very long ques at the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai. You'll need to que for an hour on both the way in and the way out!
