Fantastic holiday!!! Amazing country!! It was busy from start to finish - which was just as well as there was so much to fit in! Days started early and were packed. Our guide, Margaret, was magic - never tired and had endless energy to keep us all going when we were flagging! She was a mine of information and had a great sense of humour.
There were so many big highlights - the Great Wall, the Warriors, the pandas and the amazing Light Show, but also some of our best memories were the beautiful rice fields, cycling in Yangshuo, the fantastic cookery morning, hands on calligraphy, 'cricket man' and the daily delicious food ranging from massive banquets to simple roadside noodles.
Unlike previous Explore holidays, there were more added 'optional' costs (shows, cycling, boat trips, Hong Kong tour etc). Whilst we were very happy to pay for these, and would HIGHLY recommend them, it may have been good to have an idea of approximate 'additional' costs before going (they added up to quite a lot for a family of 5).
Overall an amazing trip - we came home feeling privileged to have seen a small tip of an enormous and fascinating iceberg. Thank you!

A busy tour with lots of travelling between cities. It's well worth it though, to see some wonderful sights including the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors and the fantastic scenery around the Li river in the south of the country.
There are a lot of optional extras available; we found that the cost of these was higher than we had anticipated and we went over budget as a consequence. The extras included cycle hire, cultural shows and a walking tour of Hong Kong. All of these extras added to the experience of the country but at quite a cost.
The food in China was excellent; our tour leader took us to various restaurants and helped us to order a range of food which included tastes familiar to us from Chinese restaurants in the UK and types of food we hadn't encountered before. The cost of these meals was reasonable, usually amounting to about £5 per person. The cooking lesson included in the tour was great fun as well as being informative and resulting in a tasty lunch in lovely surroundings.
China is hot and humid in the Summer, so physical activities were tiring. We also had a few rainy days and adopted the local custom of using umbrellas rather than raincoats which soon turned into a wearable sauna. Umbrellas were available cheaply everywhere we went.
I think all of the group were taken aback by the size of Chinese cities and the amount of people everywhere we went. We were based mainly in cities and had limited opportunities to see rural China, which is the one thing that would have improved the trip for me.
The tour leader couldn't be faulted - his organisation was first rate, and he was knowledgable, friendly and humorous.
It's difficult to pick out highlights as the entire tour was full of fantastic sights and experiences, but I particularly enjoyed the (optional) tour of the Hutongs in Beijing, a bike ride round the city walls in Xi-an and the scenery of the south.

Just back from this tour, what an amazing experience. I travelled with my 15 yr old son. The whole trip was fast paced and our tour guide was excellent. We tasted local foods in various provinces and certainly were exposed to the culture of the people in China in the cities and the remotest of villages. We had the opportunity to travel on public buses, overnight trains, Bullet Train, boats, bikes, cable car etc. The Great Wall was epic and our legs ached for days after, we cycled along the cIty walls in Xi'an and flew kites at the square of the wild goose paradox - the local people joined in and were very helpful in assisting us to fly our kites ( this was a highlight for me and a fun activity- not just for kids!). We loved the Pandas and the tea houses tasting and experience the absolute art of making and drinking tea. The Dong Village and the Pi'ang Villages were incredible and the scenery and landscape of the Pi'ang villages were breathtaking. There were a number of occasions and had to remind myself that I was actually in China -. Yangshou agin a wonderful place but very very busy and a tourist hotspot but incredible landscape and very beautiful. We were very sad to leave and the only short comings of this trip is that it is not long enough would like to have spent an extra day in Chengdu, Pi'ang Villange and Yangshou. Tracy was excellent and made the holiday what it was - absolutely fantastic - she even joined in with the kids when playing cards
