Cycling

Grade: Moderate

On this tour we cycle an average of 40 km/25 miles per day with the last 2 rides being the longest. We cycle on a mixture of tarmac roads, cycle paths and good off-road routes. A support vehicle (with room for 2 passengers) will accompany our rides where possible and transports our luggage throughout the trip while the Tour Leader cycles with the group. We have graded the route as moderate.

It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate travel insurance for cycling and to ensure that you have read and understood the full terms and conditions of your policy. Please note that some travel insurance policies do not provide cover for the use of e-bikes. If you are hiring an e-bike, it is important to verify that your policy provides appropriate cover, as an additional premium may be required.

Your bike

Your included bike is a 27 gear Stevens Galant and will be the correct frame size for your height. A pannier is included as well as the facility to fit your own pedals or saddle if you wish to bring them. We provide spare parts and take care of the day to day maintenance. All you need to bring is your own helmet and water bottle.

Electric bikes (available for an additional supplement from £199) will be a Stevens Lavena PT5. These have a low step-through frame, and are suitable for heights from 153cm to 190cm. Please note these are subject to availability on a first come first served basis and the cost is subject to change. If this is a condition of your booking please mention it at time of sale. Please contact us for more details or to request your e-bike.

Suitability

Is this the trip for you?

  • We've graded the cycling on this tour as moderate. You don't need to be a pro to take part but you should have a basic level of fitness and enjoy being in the saddle.
  • We'll take on some steeper ascents and sharp inclines as we head down the coast. Please see our day-to-day itinerary for more information.
  • We encounter a variety of terrain on this tour, to give us access to the best scenery and mimimise our time on main roads. As such our cycling routes are generally along quieter country roads and good off road sections, some of which can be surfaced with gravel or light sand. Our bikes are designed to handle these, with wide tyres and solid frames for stability.
  • On our way in and out of towns or cities, we will encounter traffic. Although typically light, traffic can, on some sections be moving relatively quickly, so you should have a basic road awareness. Your leader will highlight any sections to note well in advance.
  • It can get very hot in Portugal, if you're travelling on a summer departure, remember to pack light layers and sun protection and carry water at all times.
