Eight day trek (7 nights camping) in the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia. Undoubtedly the highlights were the dramatic scenery and the wildlife, with many species being endangered and found nowhere else. The people were very friendly and, being at altitude, it was never too hot by day or cold by night. Luckily we were not rained on at any stage during the trek (March/April).

The camping staff were fantastic and we appreciated everything they did for us, despite the ‘rough’ conditions. The tents were waterproof and were ideal for single occupant usage. However, the same sized tents were also used for two people sharing and considering all gear had to be taken into the tent every night, this made for very cramped and uncomfortable conditions. A simple rule of thumb should be that a two-man tent is suitable for one person plus gear, while (at least) a three-man tent is suitable for two persons plus gear.

The walk schedule was not too strenuous (although some days required more stamina than others!) and the routes took full advantage of the fantastic scenery. Good comfortable walking boots are essential and trekking poles are very useful on the steep descents.

The cultural trips to Gondar and Lalibela afterwards were well worth it and the standard of hotels used was very good. It was also a good idea to take internal flights rather than face excessively long and time wasting road trips. All in all, a great way to get a glimpse of a fascinating country during a relatively short visit.

I can’t really give a single highlight as there were so many. The scenery was breathtaking and every view was outstanding. I’d looked at pictures of the mountains before I went but they were even more incredible and dramatic in real life. The landscape is really varied and every day was different. The staff that supported us couldn't have been more helpful, nothing was too much trouble and the food that we had was fantastic. All the people and children we met were really friendly. Coming across the baboons throughout the trip was a fantastic experience too.

The whole trek in the Simien Mountains is breathtaking experience. The views of the Simien Mountains surpassed my hopes and expectations ( in comparison to the other mountains in the World they are probably the most stunning and most beautiful range!).Sleeping in a tent under pitch-black sky lit by millions of stars set down to the level of the horizon will never be wiped out of my memory. Similarly the friendly ,smiley people met on the route will never be forgotten. The local guide Abebo and the Explore guide Donal were magnificent laissez-faire tour leaders ideally chosen for this trip by Explore and Green Land Adventures.

This was an amazing 10 day trek which included lots of time among local people in their villages and alongside them on the trails through the Simien Mountains. The trekking is challenging and includes many days of long descents and ascents over rocky terrain. Summiting Mt. Ras Dashen was a highlight as was swimming in the river during one of trek days and - of course - all the spectacular scenery.

Food was plentiful and of good quality throughout. Our Explore Leader, Mountain Guide and camp staff/team were attentive to the group at all times and really looked out for each person as needed. For someone who is looking for challenging terrain, several long trekking days and the chance to see local wildlife this would be a great walking holiday.

I have a lower overall score only because some of the camps could have been cleaner (no fault of Explore) and the tents which were used were a bit too cramped for two people, kit bags and day packs.
