Itinerary

Itineraries on some departure dates may differ, please select the itinerary that you wish to explore.

Day 1 - Carcass Island

Fly from Mount Pleasant Airport to Carcass Island . After you claim your luggage, you will be met in the arrivals area by one of our representatives carrying a sign with your name on it. They will provide you with your welcome pack and all the relevant information for your stay in the Falkland Islands. They will also assist you with getting on your domestic flight which leaves from the same terminal - a 50 metre walk away. Falkland Islanders Rob and Lorraine McGill will be your hosts on Carcass Island. As the owners of the Island, they have overseen it for the past twenty years. Carcass Island offers superb hospitality for visitors, with home grown vegetables, organic meat and dairy produce prepared in true rustic style. Accommodation is comfortable and homely, all rooms are en-suite and situated in the main Managers House. Carcass Island: Due to the conservation efforts of it's early owners, the island has mature tussac plantations and has remained free of cats and rats for over 100 years. This makes Carcass Island an ideal spot to observe small birds such as the endemic Cobb's wren. The settlement gardens have an almost tropical feel with their Monterey cypress trees, New Zealand cabbage palms and flax and colourful array of flowers, providing an attractive home to many other small birds such as Black-chinned siskins and Falkland thrush. Away from the settlement, the sandy beaches, rolling hills and low cliffs make superb platforms from which to view the multitude of sea and shore birds that either breed or feed on or around the island. These include gentoo and magellanic penguins, yellow billed pintail duck, the endemic flightless steamer duck, magellanic oystercatchers, Striated caracara and red-backed hawk.

Day 2 - Visit West Point Island

Today you will explore West Point Island - the only opportunity to see Black-browed Albatross during your visit to the Falklands. This is a full day's tour, lasting approximately eight hours. The boat tour is not guaranteed to be private as may be shared with other clients at the lodge. On arrival at West Point Island you will have free time to explore the island before re-boarding the boat at a set time. West Point Island lies off the northwest of West Falklands. The rich wildlife, beautiful coastline and scenic settlement and harbour, make this a quintessential Falklands experience. The transfer time between Carcass Island and West Point, on your 10- passenger boat - the MV Condor, is approximately an hour. During this time, you will be entertained by dolphins and birds, who can be seen swooping down to feed in the rich seas below. Once on West Point Island, you are free to explore the picturesque settlement and garden, and then make your way to Devil's Nose; a jagged bluff teeming with over 2,000 pairs of Black-browed Albatross, 500 pairs of Rockhopper penguins and a variety of sea birds including Rock Cormorants. On the return journey, the MV Condor can circumnavigate West Point Island to reveal spectacular photographic opportunities.

Day 4 - Sea Lion Island

Today you can enjoy a two hour introductory tour of Sea Lion Island. This tour may be shared with other clients staying at the lodge. Sea Lion Island is one of the smallest and most southerly inhabited islands in the Falklands. It remains a primary destination for visitors due to the sheer abundance of wildlife concentrated in such a small area. The island is a designated National Nature Reserve and is free of predators such as cats and rats. Beautiful tussac plantations cover one fifth of the island and are alive with Falkland thrushes, Black-throated finches, Tussac birds and Magellanic penguins. Large numbers of Elephant seals and Southern Sea Lions can also be found on many of the island's spectacular beaches. There are also 47 different species of breeding birds to be viewed on the Island, which include three species of breeding penguins and five birds of prey, as well as the endangered Striated Caracara. Pods of Killer whales can often be seen close to the shore, attracted by the many seals and penguins that breed here. It truly is a a wildlife frenzy !

Day 5 - Pebble Island

You will take your domestic flight from Sea Lion Island to Pebble Island and will transfer to the Pebble Lodge. Originally built as the Farm manager's house, it has been adapted to suit the needs of visitors and retains the warm and friendly atmosphere of a large, traditional Falklands farm house. It also provides a superb base from which to explore the wildlife-rich environment. Pebble Island, at 31 kilometres long, is the third largest offshore island and is home to the longest sand beach in the Falklands. The landscape of Pebble Island varies greatly from pristine beaches, moorlands and rocky peaks to an extensive area of ponds and wetlands and dramatic coastal cliffs. All of these provide vital breeding habitats for an incredible list of some 42 breeding bird species, including some rare and elusive species. The deep ponds on the east of the island, many of which are within walking distance of the lodge, are home to Chiloe wigeon, Silvery grebes, Black-necked swans and a multitude of other wildfowl and wading birds. Many thousands of Gentoo, Rockhopper and Magellanic penguins breed on Pebble Island each summer. Eight of the Falkland endemic plants grow on the island too, including the Vanilla Daisy and the Lady's Slipper. In the afternoon a half day's tour will be provided, which will be tailored to suit your interests. Off-road tours offer the chance to visit both the east and west ends of the island, where you can enjoy an array of wildlife and historical sites.

Clothing

Parkas You should look for a lightweight, roomy, wind and water-resistant parka with some insulation. Bright colors are more visible - and thus safer - in polar environments. Gloves Keeping your hands warm and dry can be a challenge. Thin polypropylene gloves can be worn underneath warm outergloves. This allows you some protection from the cold when removing your gloves to operate your camera etc. We strongly recommend that you bring more than one pair of gloves, in case one gets wet (or lost). Hat/Cap Warm, woollen hat/cap to protect your ears, as well as a scarf, neck gaiter or other face protection, such as a balaclava. Trousers Water-resistant trousers of coated nylon or, even better, Gore-Tex® are essential for your comfort. They can be worn over your regular clothes to keep you warm and dry. We suggest that you purchase trousers a few sizes larger than you normally wear as you will be wearing them over other clothing. Gore-Tex® or similar fabrics are excellent for keeping out wind and water without trapping excess heat. Rain gear and Gore-Tex® products can be found in any outdoor sport clothing store. In addition to your waterproof trousers, warm ski pants are suggested if you have them. Warm trousers such as jeans, corduroys etc are also good. Socks Warm wool socks worn over a thin pair of silk, polypropylene socks should provide enough warmth and insulation for your feet. Bring several pairs of socks, since you will inevitably get your feet wet. Outer Clothing Woollen, knit or cotton sweaters/tops, polar fleece tops (medium weight), several cotton turtlenecks and T-shirts for layering on and off the ship. Underclothing Thermal underwear is highly recommended as it will keep you warm without adding bulk. Most polar travellers prefer a lightweight version.
