Please review your overall experience and what your highlights were

We had an amazing time for the whole 2 weeks. It was very busy but everything was worth doing, there wasn't a boring moment. At times it was a bit surreal, one day we went from travelling in a small motorised boat with a very loud engine in very fast flowing water, to standing in an art gallery at the white temple within what felt like half an hour. There was always something new to see and do. We ate the local food most of the time right down to trying grasshoppers and crickets from the local food market. My highlights were the overnight train, Chiang Mai, the cookery school, White Temple, 2 days on the Mekong, Luang Prabang waterfalls and monks receiving alms, temples of Angkor Watt

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

The title of the tour gives it a way a little. Angkor Wat had been on my wish list for many years and finally getting the opportunity to visit was such a highlight; however I have to admit the two day voyage down the Mekong was such a memorable experience that certainly wasn’t expected. We stopped off en-route at a number of local riverside villages and were welcomed each time by 'happy' kids and elders eager to welcome us into their world and see life in its simplest form. The tour was filled with things to entertain the family with the elephant sanctuary at Lampang possibly the highlight for the kids (and adults if I’m honest), closely followed by the speeding long boats down the Kok River, making paper from elephant poo, sleeping on a train as well as enjoying the cool waters of the swimming pools in many of the hotels.

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

The activities and points of interest were quite diverse and am unable to identify one in particular.

Tour Leader Name

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Ning was an exceptional tour leader and I have provided feedback in my nomination for her as tour leader for 2013

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

The amount of smoke we had to endure during our days along the Mekong was problematic. One of the tour participants was using her 'puffer' on a frequent basis and would warn any future groups of this potential hazard, especially at this time of the year when the 'slash and burn' practice is at its most prevalent. Please provide a notation of this hazard given the number of possible asthmatics who may join the tour and number of children who form part of the group.

Our Response

Thank you for your review and taking the time to nominate Ning for our Tour Leader awards.

We have noted your concerns regarding the boat trip along the Mekong River. As you note, the agricultural burning usually takes place at this time of year and air pollutant is high. We do advise customers to familiarise themselves with the current travel information relating to the destination they are visiting. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office Travel Advice Unit provides detailed information about all the destinations we visit. This helps customers make an informed decision about travelling to the country they are planning to visit.

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

Watching a procession of a hundred or so saffron robed Buddhist monks collect their daily food from the local people (and us!) at 6:00am in the morning at Luang Prabang in Laos.

Tour Leader Name

Ning

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Our Thai tour leader Ning was completely exceptional. She was prepared to go the extra mile to give us new experiences like buying fruit from the local market for us to try, and giving us advice about new foods in restaurants and cafes. Her knowledge of local cultures was profound, and she had noted my declared interest in wildlife and was able to point out birds and plants I might be interested in.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

I would strongly recommend not travelling to this area at this time. Our stay was marred by the pollution caused by the burning of the jungle to prepare for the new rice crop. There was a constant haze over the Mekong and ash regularly fell. I have a mild asthma and needed to use my inhalers very regularly throughout northern Thailand and Laos

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

This trip was made exceptional by our tour leader. I have been on several trips with various companies and have never had a guide with her depth of knowledge and people skills combined

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

The mekong cruise was by far the best thing on this trip with thr stop offs in the villages giving us a great indetailed look into lao. North thailand I thing would have been better if it were not for the rain but also the electric atmosphere in bangkok was also stunning

Tour Leader Name

sun, jak jn lao and ing in cambodia

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Sun looked after us well and we thiught we could trust her from early on. Jak was young, cool but didn't hang out with the group and skimped on information at sites. Ing at theendwas over factuak to the state of bore, the cambodia section of thi s trip is relatively poor

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Come on this trip to see thailand and lao but not cambodia. The angkor temples are massively overrated and too busy, Explore could find better things to do with our time, or perhaps visit thr site earlier. Use tuk tuks where possible, they are tremendously helpful and take full advantage of the shuttle buses in luang prabang, its a great city and I recomend the royal palace and the night market where you can buy a good variety of souvenirs

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

Explore should seriously consider dropping cambodia and instead seeing more lao and thailand. The cambodia section was boring and the lake visit was okay but rushed, needed more time to interact with locals and there were horrible fumes from the boat. Replace with si phan don, I'd have looked elsewhere if I had been aware at the time of these islands and guess I need a second trip to lao to see them. As the plane to cambodia stopped into pakse I see no reason as to why explore can't visit this area in south lao, or add a visit to the beach in ko samet of ko chang

Our Response

Thank you for your feedback.  We’re sorry you didn’t like Cambodia much, and especially the temples.  However, this is a bit of a minority view -  dropping Cambodia and especially Angkor Wat would not be generally popular, according to the feedback forms we get.  We have quite a range of tours in the area – not all of them Family ones, admittedly – offering varying lengths of time in each of the countries visited.

The highlights include going on the elephants, going down the boat, the Jungle temple and the villages along the Mekong. I'd say before you go on this trip you need to prepare for a lot of long bus journeys and insect bites especially!! ( FBM - 28th July 2011)
