Our journey takes us into the wilderness of the desert, camping on spectacular beaches and swimming in the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Oman. We camp under the stars where we meet a Bedouin family and have a camel ride, enjoy a boat cruise to see dolphins, learn how to cook a traditional Bedouin meal and visit a turtle reserve to watch them nesting. TRIPLE ROOMS This trip allows the option for triple rooms to be included within the booking on a selected number of night stops within the holiday. If you would like this option, a discount may be applicable on the cost of the trip - please ask our Sales team for further information.

Itinerary

Itineraries on some departure dates may differ, please select the itinerary that you wish to explore.

Day 1 - Join tour in Muscat

Arrive in Muscat and join the trip at the hotel. Muscat is an old walled town, arguably the Gulf's most attractive city and is surrounded by a horseshoe ring of mountains that naturally restricts its growth. The seaward face of Muscat is dominated by the Portuguese fortress of Jalali which is 700 years old and was even the country's jail up until the 1970's.

Day 2 - Morning exploring the capital with an afternoon free to explore

This morning we have a city tour of Muscat which includes visiting the impressive Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the Middle East which boasts an intricate tile ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows - its main prayer hall is covered in a Persian carpet that took 600 weavers 4 years to make! We then visit the Royal Al Alam Palace which was built by the grandfather of the current Sultan and walk to the harbour which offers good views of Jalali and Mirani forts. We also visit the charming Beit Al Zubair museum to learn a little of Oman's fascinating heritage, both ancient and modern. The final part of the morning is taken with a stroll along the waterfront of Mutrah, Muscat's oldest quarter and onto the bustling souk where you can spend further time if you wish. The afternoon is left free to relax and enjoy the city at your convenience and discover its historic character and contemporary spirit. Alternatively, why not swim in the ocean or try an optional dhow cruise. The nearest public beach which has a range of watersports available and local restaurants is 10 minutes drive away and can be reached by taxi.

Day 3 - Dolphin watching and drive to Finns Beach with cooking lesson

This morning, we take a boat to view dolphins and experience a thrill of a life time. The waters around Oman are filled with extensive marine life and one of the most familiar sights are its dolphins as they swim around and under fishing craft in search of tuna, mackerel and sardines. Continuing along the rugged coastline this afternoon, we stop at Wadi Tiwi along the way for an optional walk in the wadi (a dry valley or riverbed that contains water only during times of heavy rain) which follows the emerald green waters up through a haven of lush vegetation and palms, before heading to our camp at Finns Beach. There should be time for a swim before spending a memorable night under the clear Arabian sky. We get the opportunity to try out our culinary skills as we prepare a traditional Omani dish. The beach offers numerous small and hidden coves with some wider expanses of sand and we stay in igloo tents and enjoy a wonderful experience of camping by the Gulf of Oman.

Accommodation: Igloo Mobile Tents(or similar)

Day 4 - Travel to Sur to see dhow shipyards en-route to Ras al Hadd and its turtle reserve

Today we drive to Ras Al Hadd, pausing en-route to visit the Port of Sur. Once a major trading port with East Africa, Sur represents the seafaring origins of Oman. We visit a dhow shipbuilding yard where traditional dhow boats are still built today and have been used since the 19th century. We also visit the nearby small fishing village at Ayega, now a quiet community of old merchant houses, but once a stronghold of rebellious sheikhs. We stay tonight in a hotel with direct access to the beach and after dinner, we visit a turtle reserve where a naturalist will lead us to the beach to see turtles. The turtles migrate annually from the shores of the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea and Somalia to lay their eggs on the Sultanate's shores and as many as 20,000 turtles can visit to lay up to 50,000-60,000 eggs each year although sightings are obviously not guaranteed (turtles normally hatch between May-September). Overnight: Standard Hotel

Accommodation: Sur Plaza(or similar)

Day 5 - Drive into Wahiba Sands desert and enjoy a camel ride and meet the Bedouin family

We leave the coast behind and continue deep into the heart of the shifting sands of Wahiba, a vast sea of sand covering about 15,000 square kilometres with dunes that can rise up to 200 metres in height. The dunes are generally rusty red at the base and honey coloured on the top which give an alluring landscape of changing contours and colours. The sands are home to the Bedu who are nomadic tribesmen that roam the land with goats and camels. We meet a local family who explain how they live in such a demanding landscape. An exhilarating drive across the dunes brings us to our night stop in the Wahiba Sands on the edge of the Great Sand Sea, close to the wild, rugged Omani coastline where we camp this evening. We have a camel ride from our camp into the desert which follow in the footsteps (and camel tracks) of the nomadic Bedouin towards the settlement of Qahid, where we stop to visit the local inhabitants of these barren lands. Sunset promises stunning photo opportunities amidst the spectacular dunes, before we settle down for another night under the desert sky.

Day 6 - Drive across Wahiba Sands and onto Nizwa

In spite of its barren feel the sands contain an exotic diversity of fauna including; dragonflies, wolf, fox, wild cats and white-tailed mongooses. Some 115 species of birds have also been recorded here and it is one of the few remaining refuges for the elusive Arabian and Sand Gazelles. We continue through the desert this morning and once out of the sands, we travel to the market town of Sinaw which is a meeting point for Bedouin tribes' people for miles around. We hopefully get the chance to see a Bedouin market as well as the village of Birkat Al Mouz where we can walk around to view local life. From here, it is a fairly easy drive along tarmac roads to Nizwa, the ancient capital of Oman which is still regarded as the cultural capital of the country.

Day 7 - Goat auction, forts, abandoned villages and Oman's Grand Canyon. Drive to Muscat airport

We spend the morning exploring some of the many highlights of the surrounding area. We begin in Nizwa itself, visiting the traditional souk where we can experience a goat auction Omani style! We continue onto the 17th century Nizwa Fort which was originally built to guard the Sumail Gap between the Eastern and Western Hajar Mountains. Heading north, we travel through the mountains, passing the dramatic craggy peaks of the Jebel Akhdar ('Green Mountain') range which is the highest of its kind in the country. Despite its desolate and barren lunar landscapes, small settlements cling to the plateau areas using oases that have flourished in the folds of rocks for their water supply. We stop en route to view the Al Hamra mountain range. At 3,000m, Jebel Shams (which translates to Mountain of the Sun) is the highest peak in Oman and the area boasts an astonishing view down a sheer drop of 1000m to the bottom of the 'Grand Canyon' which is Oman's version of its American counterpart. According to one theory, the canyon was once a huge cave and evidence of fossils and shells suggests that the canyon base was at one time covered by a shallow sea. Finally, we call in for a photo stop at the eerie ruined village of Tanuf then continue onto Muscat airport where the trip ends later that day - any customers who require accommodation in Muscat that night can be transferred on to their hotel later. There is the possibility to shower at the Plaza Premium Lounge at the airport before your flight. Payment is made at the lounge itself at a cost of USD 45.00 per person for two hours - a light snack and beverages are also included.

Climate

The annual rainfall in most parts of Oman does not usually exceed 125mm, although in the north (the Jebel Akhdar mountain area), it can exceed 20-25mm per month in the December to February period. The coastal areas have a hot and humid season from May to September (up to 38 degrees C), although temperatures remain high throughout the year. Inland the humidity is lower, and nights are cooler in winter when there can be frost in the desert. There is perpetual sunshine throughout the year.

Clothing

You will need lightweight clothing for sunny days, with a sunhat and neck protection. You will also need some warmer clothing for the evenings. Nights camping in the desert and along the Arabian coast can be cold in winter, so please bring a warm jacket or fleece. Bare shoulders and legs cause offence outside main cities and hotels. Therefore women should cover up when visiting villages. At our wild camping spots shorts are fine. Women are advised not to wear shorts or dresses that are too revealing as this can attract unwelcome attention in the streets of Muslim towns - loose fitting trousers are ideal. Women should also cover their head and shoulders when entering a mosque and men should wear long trousers.

Comfortable walking shoes or boots, trainers (that you don\ t mind getting wet) and sandals.

Luggage: On tour

One main piece of luggage and a daypack. Dust-proof bags will be needed for luggage whilst travelling through the desert.
