We are so pleased that we joined these two tours together. The first week - China Highlights - was full on travelling from city to city. Starting in Hong Kong and finishing in Beijing we were guided by the exceptional Tracy who was enthusiastic and very keen to show us her country. We travelled through beautiful countryside and stayed in cities surrounded by skyscrapers. All the hotels were just right. Basic but always a decent bed and hot shower. Food was great. We soon learnt to eat with chopsticks and got used to Chinese dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Take part in all the excursions - though the one in Hong Kong you can do yourself. If you have time cycle around Xian city wall - it is a great experience. There are plenty of atms. Always have toilet paper on you and strengthen your thigh muscles before you arrive!!
For the second week we trekked the Great Wall. This was probably the first holiday ever, that we didn't want to end. On the last day we left the Great Wall with much sadness. It is an awe inspiring man made feature within the most beautiful countryside. Sitting on top of mountain ranges it stretches for miles. We walked in remote areas where the wall is untouched and crumbling away. Every turn your breath is just taken away. We could have easily had another week there. Yes you do need to be fit and able to clamber up some very steep parts. We were very lucky, as with the previous tour, that we had a fantastic group of fellow explorers with us who supported one another in difficult areas.

This tour is a must do. 10/10 to Explore for their itinerary and 10/10 to our fellow Explorers. We can't wait to book another trip.

The walking on the Wall was a real highlight but I feel we were unprepared by Explore as to how demanding it would be - I felt some of the walks were very tough, especially where the Wall is crumbling and steep and it was more like rock scrambling than walking.
Some hotels were poor, especially the one in Sian.
I underestimated the impact of pollution on the scenery - that was a disappointment, though obviously not something Explore could alter.
Explore should have warned us of the cost of the optional trips as it was necessary to do them to see everything - they probably should not have been options but included - the Hong Kong one was particularly expensive and everyone in the group had to draw additional funds to cover it.
Our Chinese guide 'Peter' was outstanding.
The itinerary was excellent - we were very busy.

The tour was very good with a good mix of highlights and adventure. It was a small group, only 8at first, which made travel and organisation very easy. The guide was very good, knowledgable and friendly.accomodation was simple clean and what I had expected.
It would have been good to have had an idea of the overall cost of the optional activities.

Very much enjoyed trip, having embarked on it in a "don't know what to expect" frame of mind. Our guide, Peter, was good fun and easy to get along with as well as knowledgeable and always able to answer our questions. The highlights were probably the Terracotta Warriors and the last couple of days on the Wall, which were amazing - partly because it was much more remote and also because the scenery and weather were so beautiful. The Sound and Light show at Yangshuo and the acrobats in Beijing were also memorable. The accommodation varied in standard but the beds were always clean and there was always a shower though some definitely better than others!

Tips? Carry a fork or spork if you're not proficient with chopsticks, be prepared for "squatting" toilets and carry toilet paper. Expect lots of steps both up and down on the Wall!

Deliver what they say they will, we have used Explore regularly as their blend of activity/leisure suits us extremely well. Tour guides, without exception, have been excellent.
