What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

The highlight has to be the Kurdish people: so pleased (and surprised!) to see us. I don't think I've ever been on a tour when I've had so many photos taken of me, rather than by me, before. Locals asking us to be photographed with their children, family members, friends ... it seems strange to think how many pics there must be of us all around the region! But the Yazidi Temple is also a very memorable highlight, and the scenery, once away from the oil prospecting areas, is stunning. And I shall not forget the memorial to the victims of the chemical attack on Halabja in a hurry, and the very moving accounts of that day which we heard there.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Fabulous. This departure was led by a brilliant UK tour leader - David Short - with a local guide (Rebin) who was the ultimate fixer, whether stopping the traffic for us to cross three lane highways, talking the head of the wonderful mosque in Erbil into letting us all in, persuading the traffic police that our bus which they wished to ban from one area on account of its size would easily get in, around, and down again. David is a BBC cameraman in his other life, so the best possible person to have around to ensure the best photos, and was just so good at looking after us all.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Do not come expecting fabulous ancient sites - they were all destroyed by Saddam Hussein, although I understand that new sites are being excavated and who knows what may be found in an area whose human history goes back over 6000 years. But if you love meeting people from other cultures, you could not ask for a more welcoming people than the Kurds, and the scenery is spectacular.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

I'd love to go back in a few years and see how the Kurds are getting on. It's a privilege to have been able to watch them at this realtively early stage of developing into a successful state, and I hope they achieve their dream of becoming an independent nation. They deserve it.

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

Sulimaniya - view of the city from above during sunset and the way the city was lit up making it look like a jewel. Halabja - a harrowing view of the memorial and museum and grave but it was necessary to understand the plight and suffering of the Kurdish people.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Tour leader David was exceptionally professional and well researched and extremely well prepared.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Don't expect too much from the towns you visit/explore. Nothing was fantastically mind blowing but the experience of being there and meeting the people and conversing with the locals was amazing. That's why you want to go to Kurdistan.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

All in all, this trip was an eye opener to the plight and suffering of the Kurdish people. Until you go and see it first-hand I don’t think you can truly understand what they went through or their history. You would think that the human race would learn by now from these past experiences and hope for something like Halabja or a similar catastrophic event to never happen again. But just looking up north across the border into Syria and you see we haven’t learned anything at all and I doubt we ever will. This was my thoughts as I went around the memorial museum in Halabja.
