Itinerary

Our tour of the Greek islands starts in Athens. Combining the ancient and modern world, the centre of Athens is surprisingly compact. If your flight arrives earlier in the day, you might like to visit one of the cafes in the colourful Psyrri district which offer traditional Greek cuisine such as aubergines, tomatoes and cheese washed down with ouzo or raki. There are traditional rustic tavernas in the well-known Plaka area at the foot of the Acropolis, too. For those arriving in time, our tour leader will meet you in the hotel reception at 7pm and for those that wish, there'll be the chance to go out for dinner. Due to a number of flights arriving into Athens later in the evening, our welcome meeting will take place on day two - details will be left in the hotel reception. There are no other activities planned today, so you're free to arrive in Athens at any time. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Athens International Airport (ATH), which is about a one-hour drive from the hotel. Our time in Athens on this highlights trip is limited, if you can spare more time why not consider extending your trip by arriving a couple of days earlier.

In Naxos, we'll stay in town, just a few metres from the beach and a ten-minute walk from the old town. The small, family-run hotel has a wrap-around garden, decking area and an indoor spa jacuzzi and Hamam. The breakfasts are also known to be fantastic!
While in Santorini, we stay a 15-minute drive away from the island's main town, Fira. All rooms are air-conditioned, have satellite TV and a balcony or terrace. There's also a large swimming pool to cool off in.
Breakfasts are included at our accommodations. It's worth noting that Greek breakfasts tend to be simple, continental buffets, consisting of bread, jams, cheese, cereal and occasionally fruits and yogurt. Cooked options are rare.
Suitability
Is this the trip for you?
- We've graded the pace of our Greek islands tour as moderate and we'll cover a lot of ground to pack in the highlights.
- Due to the nature of a lot of accommodation on the islands, there are no lifts and generally no porters. You'll need to be able to carry your own luggage up to your room in hotels so make sure you don't pack more than you can manage.

Local crew
Although voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly, you should allow approximately €20 of local currency for tipping.
In order to make things easier for you, the Explore Leader may organise a group's tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the trip.
If you wish, we recommend tipping your driver €15 per week.
Tour leader
Tipping isn't compulsory, and we work hard to ensure that our leaders all receive a fair wage. You may however, want to recognise a leader that has done a great job or really added to your trip by giving them a tip. We're often asked about the recommended amount. It is a tricky one, and down to personal preference, but we would recommend €25 to €35 per person per week as a guideline.
