Today we have a long day of travelling, so we'll depart early at around 8am. First, we'll drive the short distance to the ancient city of Troy where, according to legend, the artful Ulysses devised the wooden horse strategy, thereby ending the ten-year Trojan War. Here, nine ruined cities, one on top of the other, have been uncovered, going back some 5,000 years. Troy VI is the assumed walled city of King Priam (1800-1275 BC), celebrated by the blind Greek poet Homer in the Iliad and all but lost in legend until unearthed by amateur archaeologist Schliemann in 1871.
Boarding our bus again, we'll make the three-hour journey to the Greco-Roman remains at Pergamon. Pergamon gave its name to and was the source of 'parchment', for which it was famous throughout the Middle East. We'll visit the striking acropolis, impressively perched above the modern-day town of Bergama, which contains the remains of a library, a theatre, temples and altars. Later this afternoon, we'll drive to Selcuk, a further three hours away.
Today is one of our longest driving days and we'll travel for approximately seven hours.

Suitability
Is this the trip for you?
- We've graded our tour of Turkey as full-on. Expect long drives in our comfortable private bus with air-conditioning and we are rewarded by some of the country's most astonishing sites and beautiful scenery.
- On some days we will stop at highway service stations that are conveniently located on our route, have clean facilities and sell a great range of local drinks and snacks.
- It can get incredibly hot in Turkey during the summer months - during these periods our itinerary might vary slightly to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
- This trip involves a lot of walking, sometimes on rocky or uneven terrain such as in the ancient sites. Please bring comfortable walking shoes but also note that it is possible to sit out of parts of the itinerary if you prefer.
- Where possible we stay in accommodation that is locally-owned and well-located. Some of the hotel rooms and bathrooms are compact (especially in towns and cities where we are centrally located) and some may have low lighting as this is usual in Turkey.
- Typical Turkish breakfasts will have a selection of cheese, olives, tomatoes, cucumber, salad, eggs, fruit, jam, honey, pastries and bread with tea and coffee. Often there will also be a simple cereal provided to cater for foreign guests.
- Vegetarians will generally be well catered for as many dishes are based on vegetables and dairy products.
- Please note that availability of ingredients for restricted diets such as gluten-free or dairy-free is very limited in Turkey and we strongly recommend you bring specialised dietary items with you.
