Hector, the tour leader was outstanding. His care, attention to detail and enthusiasm were inspirational. He is an outstanding asset to Explore.
The Inca trail delivered everything it promised and the standard of food and accomodation during the trek were very high. The Hotel in Cusco was poor - we spent a lot of time there and the lack of any bar / lounge facilities fragmented the group (everyone was confined to sitting reading books in their bedroom). The hotel we stayed in at Cusco was not the one listed on the trip notes and looking on-line suggests that it was a very poor substitute.
The hotel in the jungle had only cold showers (again this was not stated in the trip noted). It was cold and wet when we were there and the cold showers were unpleasent. Added to that, there was no electricity till 5pm which meant that (because it was dark and rainy outside) meant that our room was too dark to even read a book after 3pm. We literally had to sit and wait of the lights. I am sure they could have started the generator an hour earlier on wet days!!

We loved the Inca Trail and Amazon extension trip. Jorge was an excellent and knowledgeable guide who ensured that we all managed the Inca Trail with very few problems and we got to see aspects of Peru such as staying in a local village that we wouldn't have experienced if we had done this trip in any other way. We would definitely recommend without hesitation.

Itinerary was comprehensive and we packed a great deal of experiences into our 18 days. The inca trail was definitely the highlight of the trip and not as strenuous as we thought as we had a week to acclimatise to the altitude. Staying in the home stay in Misminay was another highlight and another day there would have been good to spend some more time with the local population. We went for the optional Machu Picchu mountain walk at Machu Picchu which was a big rushed so on hindsight that wasn't needed as you get the view of Machu Picchu from the sun gate when you finish the Inca Trail. The accommodation in Cusco was disappointing as our itinerary had a better class of hotel and we had a hostel which was adequate but very basic and a bit tatty compared to what we expected. The few days in the Amazon Basin was worth it as the 2 weeks doing the inca trail itinerary isn't particularly restful so a few "down" days rounded off the holiday. Plus there was a bar in the resort which wasn't available at the hostel in Cusco so it meant the holiday group were able to mingle better rather than being in their own rooms. All told a very worthwhile trip and a good experience for our 16 and 14 year old. The trip notes are a little out of date - for example, it's not clear that you get a holdall from Explore for the inca trail.

Fantastic trip, thoroughly enjoyed by all the family. Highlights were the Inca trail and Amazon. Gradual exposure to increasing altitude meant everyone adapted and had no problems on the trek. Stunning scenery, fabulous Inca ruins with a very knowledgeable guide, Hector to provide all background info. Well thought out Inca trail itinerary meant we hardly saw other groups and had first 2 camp sites to ourselves. Incredible standards of comfort and food provided along the trail. Fun activities - rafting, mountain biking and horse riding also available. Highly recommended holiday!
