On this short but action packed trip we explore the 'Lost City' of Petra, built by the ancient Nabatean people nearly 2,000 years ago. We discover the magnificent rock-cut tomb facades including the famous Treasury, carved from the soft ochre sandstone. We also float in the Dead Sea, travel into the dramatic landscapes of Wadi Rum and camp Bedouin-style in the desert.

During April to November days are generally sunny and hot without rain with temperatures around 32°C. In spring and autumn evenings can be cool and night temperatures can drop suddenly especially in the desert. Expect cold nights in winter (December to February) when temperatures can drop to around 0 degrees. Some rain should also be expected at this time of year.

Lightweight clothing is essential in mid- summer, with a sun-hat and neck protection, though a sweater and light jacket are advisable for Wadi Rum. Early mornings and winters in Jordan can be very cold, especially when camping in the desert, so please bring suitable warm clothing. We recommend a waterproof jacket. Women are advised not to wear shorts or dresses that are too revealing as this can attract unwelcome attention in the streets of Moslem towns - loose fitting trousers or slacks are ideal. Women should also cover their head and shoulders when entering a mosque and men should wear long trousers.
omfortable walking shoes or boots, trainers and sandals (good grip is vital for Petra).

One main piece of baggage and a day sack. Hotel porters are not always available, so please make sure you don't overload yourself.
Sleeping bags, blankets and mattresses are provided, but we suggest you bring your own sleeping sheet. A personal water bottle and small torch are useful for the nights in Wadi Rum. Anti-bacterial hand wash, such as Travelproof's 'H20-No' water- less hand scrub (available through Explore Trader catalogue); try to avoid anti-bacterial wipes as these can pose a disposal problem. Camping at Wadi Rum is wild in a communal tent. Privacy and facilities are thus limited but more than compensated for by the location.

Jordan's tourism infrastructure is well developed and standards are generally good. Our accommodation throughout this tour is in modern midrange hotels with en-suite facilities and air conditioning. We start in a good hotel in Amman. Our hotel in Petra enjoys a superb location, close to the entrance to the site so perfect for exploring. A highlight of our trip is at our desert camp in Wadi Rum. The location is stunning in a little visited part of the Wadi. We camp in a communal Bedouin tent and all bedding is provided along with basic facilities.
Can you drink the water? The water quality is poor and therefore it is recommended to avoid drinking tap water during your trip.
