As always with these trips it is really important to study the itenarary before booking. I joined this trip to see parts of Thailand that I hadn't visited and I knew that temple-overload would affect me at times. This is particularly the case in the first half of the trip. The first day in Chang-Mai is particularly tiring for those that don't sleep well on trains. (The food on the train was much better than I remembered)

The highlights for me were the elephant sanctuary, the rafthouses, the food and the Koh Samed extension.

Woody is an excellent, knowledgable leader and everything ran smoothly. He took us to some excellent, cheap eateries.

The hotel in Bangkok is excellent but bear in mind that it is some distance from the cheap, easy-to-use Skytrain and underground systems. If you are a solo traveller wanting to explore Bangkok from the hotel it is c£2.50 each way to the Skytrain. I had an early flight arrival and so had arranged directly with the hotel to pay half room rate for a guaranteed early check-in - they waived this, which was good of them. All of the hotels had wifi.

There now seems to be a transaction charge of c£5 to use ATMs throughout Thailand.

Although the island extension is un-escorted we were escorted to and from the ferry which was a pleasant surprise and made for a good start to the trip. Luggage was seemlessly transferred to and from the resort. The resort is in a quieter part of the island but is close to the town and main beach and bars. The accomodation was excellent with great service. Within a half hour walk there were plenty of much quieter and equally picturesque beaches. If you take a boat trip make sure you take your national Park pass with you or you won't be allowed off the boat during the trip.

Overall I am glad I arrived a day early and took the extension. This is a very good trip that is well run and does give a good variety of experiences to supplement the cultural aspects.

Fantastic group of people, excellent friendly and fun sensitive guide Woody X

Elephant bathing and feeding was a humbling and delightful experience and food at the park was the best vegan selection in the world!

Cycling around Sukkohthai temples was great fun even though hadn't touched base with a saddle for decades!

Si Satchanaali was sublime and un spoiled by too many people.

The overnight train was a memorable experience and food on board was really good even for a vegetarian!

Most hotels were excellent value and swimming pools a welcome relief as was the air on in rooms and the 7 to 11's

Ko Samet was a welcome rest from the many travel options ... and worth taking a boat trip!

Rice barge relaxation trips were excellent as was the food cooked on board!

Only ... when arriving after the night train when people haven't necessarily slept well ... maybe go to hotel and do temple and tour much later or next day ... that's the only change I'd make!

THIS was an excellent trip, with an excellent guide and great group of peopleXXX

The variety and pace of the itinerary and transport was balanced well. Pok our tour leader was capable and enthusiastic and always around and approachable, so we felt cared for, safe but still adventurous.

an excellent trip introducing Thailand to travellers, focusing on old capitals and the river kwai. A lot of driving but no problems, although a larger vehicle would have made us more comfortable, we did feel rather squashed in the minibus, though it was adequate.

What we loved about this trip was the variety of transport used from mini bus to overnight train to rice boat, bike & tuc tuc. Took you from the bustle of Bangkok & Chiang Mai to the much quieter agricultural areas and also time to reflect on the river Kwai bridge & cemetery. As expected things can & do go wrong & we were known to be on plan C one day but our great guide Woody always knew how to cope with changing situations. You will definitely need a torch on the floating hotel which was a lovely atmospheric experience. Overall a fantastic introduction to Thailand.

It was an amazing tour with a good group and an excellent tour leader. It was fascinating to see historic parts of Thailand beyond the beaches and islands. The historical sites are very interesting and bear comparison with the better-known ones in other South East Asian countries. Cycling around Sukhothai was great fun. We had a wide variety of transport from overnight train to rice barge on the River Kwai, which was lovely and peaceful, with excellent food cooked on the barge. The raft hotel was quite an experience and superceded our expectations, although a torch is essential. The Grand Palace in Bangkok was again very interesting, although there were a huge number of Chinese tourists there. The Golden Mount in Bangkok, which we visited on our own, had far fewer tourists and is worth seeing. Ko Samet is a good place to finish the tour and our hotel (Baan Supparod) is excellent and the staff are particularly friendly and helpful. The whole day snorkelling boat trip to the five islands, booked on the beach, is definitely worth doing. We found all Thai people very friendly and welcoming.

Thailand is definetly a must do! Explore organised this trip perfectly, taking you to some amazing places that are off the beaten track. The River raft House was defitely a highlight on the trip, feeding the bathing elephants each morning as they pass down the river.

The tour was full of variety and surprises with several activity options from which to choose with a good balance of cities and countryside. Our Leader, John was helpful, informative and good humoured; the group was a mix of ages who all mingled happily.John was thoughtful and considerate; prepared details and obtained tickets for onward journeys; endeavoured to offer options to please everyone. Good sense of humour.
