A wonderful, life changing trip.

My highlights were the breathtaking, nothing-can-prepare-you-for-it MachuPicchu, the stunning Taquile island home stay, and the fantastic cities of Arequipa and Cusco.

Tip: More time is needed in the itinerary for Arequipa.

Our tour leader, Eliuth Perez, was simply fantastic. Incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his country, he really made Peru -and the history of the Incas in particular- come alive for the group. His enthusiasm was infectious and his friendly and sociable personality and great sense of fun ensured that every person in the group felt included, happy and at ease. He went above and beyond on multiple occasions to add a personal touch - buying a small birthday gift for a member of the group, making a small detour to ensure a group member saw something they had read about, being incredibly patient and kind about my attempts at speaking Spanish.

His excellent organisational skills meant we didn't need to worry about any of the logistics along the way and he gave us very clear instructions and information exactly when we needed it.

His willingness to share his knowledge, experience and advice and his generosity and kindness really turned what would have been a really interesting trip into an incredible experience of lasting friendships, ignited interest in the Incas, amazing food and wonderful adventures.

I really enjoyed the whole experience. Machu Picchu was just fantastic as was the experience of being in the rainforest. The visit to Cusco and the trip to Uros and Taquile islands really were very exciting. I did feel that the road trips to Nazca and Arequipa were very long trips to be taken in such quick succession.

What makes Explore so great is the choice of well informed, passionate guides, the off the beaten path choices, affordable price, and group maximum at around a dozen or so. Also, as Americans we really prefer not to travel with other Americans, so being able to travel with travelers from the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Europe is very important to us. If it was just Americans, we would not use Explore.

My first trip with Explore was to the Greek islands about 20 years ago, and this trip to Peru was my second trip. My mom, however, has gone on over a dozen trips with Explore.
