The guide. Although a pleasant guy we felt:
- his English was poor
-poor communication/rapour
-little interest in the group
-there was no "how was it for you"
-was he inexperienced?
-inaccurate info re timings
- not equipped for emergencies ie first aid - all he carried was a mobile phone!
- uniformed - decision making required

The whole holiday did NOT exceed or meet expectations
Why was Viesta picked as a location - not impressed - not all facilities available at hotel as stated.
Why were we expected to pay a tourist tax we were out of season?

Transfers/ coaches all on time and very good.
All hotel staff helpful and polite
Rooms very good at Viesta but not so in Matera as very small

Sorry but overall we would not be recommending thus trip as not value for the cost of the trip.

Thank you for your feedback in regards to the above trip, we’re sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your Explore Leader. Victor is one of our newest leaders, having only been trained here in the UK in March – which could explain his inexperience in certain situations, especially in regards to the tourist tax, which that is always included in the cost. All your concerns have been addressed with Victor and we will continue to monitor any feedback we receive about his performance, but we are sure that he will improve with more experience.

The group was delightful, the leader fun and knowledgeable, the destinations off the beaten path and the walks (some challenging) a perfect way to get a sense of place.

I have travelled many times with Explore and am sure I will again. Itineraries that include lunch/wine tastings I feel need to have the majority of the walking done before so that it is a relaxing experience. I find the Explore guides excellent and accommodation great. It is also very convenient having the meeting place at airports, as many do, especially for my fellow traveller (Canada) and myself (New Zealand) so eliminates the added hassle of finding our way to some small town. As I sometimes have left NZ weeks prior to my trip it would be good to be able to access our final documents earlier.

I have done about 15 Explore trips in the past same number of years and have been reasonably satisfied in all. Having a good well informed and funloving leader is the most attribute to me.

The walk through the Gargano back to Vieste, with its undulations and stunning views, was about equal with exploring the amazing town of Matera. Very able leader. Everything was very well organised and he took enormous trouble to ensure we were well looked after in restaurants. His variations on the published programme were definitely for the better. Persuading the owners of the private Masseria Venusio to supply us with a typical lunch was brilliant and one of the meals I most enjoyed.

Interesting and varied walks. Vieste is an interesting town in the spur of Italy, whilst Matera, the second base, is an absolute gem, and unique in my experience. An enthusiastic, and very capable and friendly leader.

1.The approach to Matera crossing the gorge and rising though the Sassi area. 2.The optional boat trip was really excellent penetrating to several stunning caves. 3. The rural trullis in the area round Alberobello and the trulli quarters of Alberobello itself though somewhat touristy in part. Excellent. We were a small but diverse group of only five people and Maxi successfully bonded the group together catering for the varying wishes of the members of the group and gathering feedback on the best parts of the tour.
