The trip was absolutely amazing and Aurora staff worked tirelessly to make sure we had the best experience, including liaising with other ships so that we only saw one small boat in the distance once; the rest of the time we could have been alone in the pack ice and waters around Svalbard. The weather was amazing most of the time (some low cloud and one day with snow, both of which added to the atmosphere), with the most beautiful light on the water and ice. We were really well looked after for food, and fellow travellers, mainly Australians with some British, Americans and a Belgian couple, were great and equally as interested in the wildlife. We were lucky to have some really extraordinary sightings of polar bear including one feeding on a whale and another hunting seal (unsuccessfully) on the pack ice for over four hours. Also walrus, Arctic fox, seals, reindeer and many seabirds. I highly recommend this trip, and I say this as someone whose luggage was delayed, arriving only after the ship had left, so I was travelling extremely light!

Excellent trip and first ship to circumnavigate Spitsbergen this year breaking through the ice in Hinlopen Stretet. Very close sightings of all the anticipated mammals and birds with wonderful photograph opportunities. Very knowledgeable guides covering both wildlife and history of Svalbard. Accommodation and food on the Polar Pioneer were good and the trip benefitted from the relatively small number of passengers (51)
High lights have to include the polar bear which came within a few metres of the ship and the close encounters with walrus.
Overall a very well organised trip with the tour leader and captain cooperating fully to give everyone a truly memorable experience of Svalbard and the arctic wildlife.

This was a trip of extremes. Periosd of excitement when the wildfife appeared and long periods of boredom when the fog came in. This trip is not what I expected and for the money I paid I would not recommend it if you want an active holiday chasing wild life. This is Cruise with a bit of wildlife thrown in , if that is your thing then its great. I wanted a Polar safari which it most definitely is not. We had 20 time slots to get out on the zodiacs , we actaully got out on the zodiacs on 7 occassions for about 90 minutes each . Thats in 10 days. When we did get off te ship the zodiacs were great fun and we had one amazing Polar Bear sighting for about an hour. We had 1.5 days fog bound which meant that we had to stay on the ship and we could see anything at all from the ship.On the clear days in the ice it was beautiful but that was not very often and not for very long. Please note that this is a small ship of 130 passengers capacity and other than a darts board ,a Frozen Planet DVD and lectutres there is no entertainment to occupy you - hence the long periods of boredom. The food was excellent and as I say the staff performed very well. All of the staff were excellent and catered for our every need apart from wildlife.

We’re sorry to hear that the itinerary was not as you expected, especially as you spent a lot of time onboard due to the bad weather. We have spoken with the operations team for the M/S expedition and they are confident that they did everything possible to ensure the best experience. We can see that the ship did cover a considerable distance, but unfortunately the weather did have an impact on the itinerary on this occasion.

Seeing the wildlife was amazing - we saw quite a number of polar bears - some eating freshly caught seal - though we never actually saw the PBs catch them. We were able to get reasonably close and so had a fantastic experience.
We also saw walrus, arctic fox and a variety of sea birds.
The ice, glaciers and general scenery were absolutely beautiful. The expedition staff are all very informative and interesting to listen to.
Fellow expeditioners (that's what they call you) were a good crowd and it's good to be on a small ship.
It might be expensive - but it's well worth it - a special experience.
