The highlights were: the incomparable tour leader, Tim (knowledgeable, endlessly patient, ever-helpful - going out of his way, for example, to try to retrieve a power adaptor I had left behind in a hotel - intelligent and thoughtful in all his remarks about ancient and modern Turkey/Anatolia/Asia Minor); the sites of Alinda, Didyma and Aphrodisias; meals away from hotels; hotels in Selcuk and Fethiye

Tips:
early October weather in SW Turkey was perfect Mediterranean weather.

The approach to some of the sites was steeper and rougher than my pair of (sensible) sandals could really manage. But it is hard to pack a big pair of mountain boots. There must be some in-between solution to the right footwear for this tour.

Don't forget a sink plug.

Be prepared for Turkish breakfast: cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, very occasionally fruit, lots of yogurt and cheese and breads. Try the delicious salty milk drink, ayran, for total refreshment after touring a site.

Totally fascinating archaeological sites - but worth doing some homework before you go on the Greeks and Romans, to appreciate their architecture and the myths, beliefs and culture they show so well.

It was all excellent apart from the first night which was a combination of late arrival and the hotel had overbooked with a wedding party so that my room was not ready for me. The arrangement for collecting me at the airport was not on time due to so many different arrival times and I found this a bit unnerving as I did not have a travelling companion.

I’m glad that overall you enjoyed your holiday in Turkey, I’ve travelled to this area myself and I fell in love with the abundance of history, mouth-wateringly good food and beautiful coastal scenery. I’m sorry to hear that you experienced difficulties on arrival with the airport transfer and the first hotel, as regardless of the number of passengers arriving at different times or your flight arriving later in the day, this still shouldn’t be the case. I’ve passed your comments on to our local agent and I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Each of my 3 trips with Explore have great itineraries spending more time visiting sites rather than sitting in a bus. Great mix of free and organized time. There is security being with the group yet the small group structure allows breaking away to visit any nonitinerary places on my own. Each of the guides has been great.
