Wow! What a holiday! As a single Mum of 2 teen-girls I was a little trepidatious before the trip, but wanted to give my girls an insight into Asia with all its colour and complexity. Everything Explore do, from the meticulous planning of the itinerary to make it teen-appropriate, to employing the most brilliant tour guide in the form of Upali, made this the most fantastic trip.

We released baby turtles into the Indian Ocean, saw wild elephants drinking and bathing, watched orphaned ones being fed, learned about the colonial influences of the Dutch, Portuguese and British, and came home with more Ceylon Tea than can reasonably be drunk before this time next year! The itinerary is all it promises to be in the trip notes, and then Upali provides you with more!

My girls have learned so much, we all had a good rest from our busy lives at home, and most importantly, we have made memories to last a lifetime.

I chose the Family adventure trip to Sri Lanka and the Maldives for me and my 13 year old daughter to celebrate my 50th birthday. We had the best time and created some special memories. The itinerary was well-thought through with some lovely touches along the way - I won't forget how tea and delicious coconut rice balls were produced from the tuk tuk after our swim in the quarry or experiencing an unexpected but welcome head and neck massage when we visited the spice farm.

Although the Sri Lankan part was really busy I can't think of anything I would have wanted to drop. What made our holiday really special was our fantastic knowledgeable Sri Lankan tour leader Upali Jayakody and his team who couldn't do enough for us.

The Sri Lankan itinerary includes the traditional tourist sites such as Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and the elephants which are all awesome but there are also some very special group only moments such as walking through paddy fields and swimming in a fresh water river complete with waterfall. The accommodation was great and varied. Our highlights were the mud house, the Giratale hotel overlooking the reservoir and the colonial hotel.
The Maldives part of the trip was especially welcome after the hectic schedule of Sri Lanka and a perfect end to the holiday. The kids loved jumping off the boat; we snorkelled with turtles, danced to traditional drums and ate some amazing food.

My top tips would be :
- take a first aid kit - with this type of trip there is inevitably some tumbles and I fell off my bike (on the first day) and it is good to have your own stack of antiseptic wipes and plasters.
- take a rain coat for the trip to the tea plantation region
- make sure you have sterling for the kitty in Sri Lanka - this is held by the tour leader which takes care of all the tips during the trip. Its a great idea but I hadn't planned for it.
- make sure you have enough dollars for the crew tips in the Maldives especially as this comes at the end of the trip. The norm was $10 per crew member per day including the tour guide (per family) and I just about had enough.

This was a great tour with a good mix of culture and wildlife. The accommodation was very good and the mud house experience was great. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the cultural sites we visited and was committed to us getting the most from our trip. The views of the elephants and releasing turtles to the sea were highlights in Sri Lanka. The Maldives at the end was a great way to relax and wind down and the swimming and snorkelling were great. The food provided at all locations was good but the food on the boat was excellent.

Sri Lanka part of trip was very busy but well-planned. Last few days involved long bus journeys.
Maldives part of trip was disappointing with itinerary items removed and not replaced; guide not really engaged.

What a fantastic adventure and experience holiday. Sri Lanka was reasonably fast paced, but it was needed to be able to see as much as we did. The scenery, historic sites and wildlife were incredible. Our guide Dodan and his team were exceptional. He engaged children and adults alike and was an intrinsic part of making the holiday.
There were so many highlights to this trip: the Mudhouse was unique- the staff ensured our daughter had an unforgettable birthday (decorating the table with a lovely display of lentils). Releasing the baby turtles into the ocean was magical & an experience we will always treasure. We feel this trip gave more of a flavour of the real Sri Lanka, not just the well trodden tourist path. Hiking through paddy fields, cycling through rural villages and speaking to a tsunami survivor at the roadside plus regular tasting of local delicacies added to this experience.
The Maldives provided a contrast to the hectic schedule in Sri Lanka. The boat crew were great and the amount, variety and taste of food that was produced was astonishing.
Outside of the 2 main islands the Maldives are fantastic with an abundance of turtles, tropical fish and massive coral heads and plenty of fishing opportunities.
Comments and tips :
Needed more time to explore Kandy
Tour leader in Maldives very casual approach & didn't follow the itinerary.
Ensure have enough money for tips for the crews in both Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Don't expect all the hotels to be of European standard but perfectly adequate.

If you want a different holiday experience we would thoroughly recommend this trip.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Every day was so packed with activities and fun it has taken us a while to digest the experience. Sam, our guide in Sri Lanka was a one-off, always making us laugh - he was particularly good with the children. And Teddy and the crew of Sea Coral in the Maldives were fabulous - making us feel really welcome and safe whilst on the boat and in the water.

Highlights were the mud house, the elephant drives, village walks, wild swimming and the baby turtles.

Only one bit of feedback - we were not clear before travelling about the requirement to tip both sets of guides in both countries. We were happy to tip them as both teams had been brilliant but we would have brought more cash had we known and it did add quite a bit to the cost of the holiday. Worth noting.
