Itinerary

Itineraries on some departure dates may differ, please select the itinerary that you wish to explore.

Day 1 - Jungle trek, riverboat ride at dusk

After finishing your Explore group tour or Explore Tailormade holiday, fly to Puerto Maldonado (cost not included). On arrival in Puerto Maldonado you will be met by a representative of your lodge. You will be taken to the lodge office in the town, where you can sort your luggage so that you only take what you need to the jungle. (Your main luggage can be left in a locked room at the office). You then travel by minibus and motorised canoe to your lodge in the jungle. After lunch and being shown to your room, you will take your first walk into the local jungle. On an easy walk through the jungle you will see a variety of tropical trees and plants and learn of their medicinal properties. You may even spot toucans in the tall trees. There is then time to relax and acclimatise to the local humidity before returning to the boat to go in search of white caiman along the river banks and in the water. In the dark, caiman eyes show red in torch light making them much easier to spot. If you are lucky you will also see some of the other nocturnal animals that roam the river banks.

Day 2 - Oxbow lake boatride

This morning you set out early for a short trek through the jungle which brings you out at Lake Sandoval. The oxbow lake is incredibly scenic, the still glittering water is surrounded by rainforest, caiman gently slip in and out of the water, giant otters hunt for piranhas while kingfishers and butterflies flit over the water. Taking to dugout canoe you’ll have the chance to spot wildlife while calmly floating across the river. Roughly the size of a turkey, the striking and noisy hoatzin bird can be found sitting in bushes around the water’s edge. The afternoon affords the opportunity to explore further, with a canopy walkway (Hacienda Concepcion) or lookout towers (Corto Maltes). With incredible sunset views, you’ll be able to spot birds and hopefully squirrel, howler and capuchin monkeys playing in the treetops.

Please note: The order and variety of excursions available may vary dependent upon where you are staying and availability.

Accommodation: Nape Lodge(or similar)

Day 3 - Clay lick, afternoon meet local communities

This morning you’ll walk to a nearby clay lick. As well as parrots and macaws, some mammals eat clay from certain areas - however they are much more reserved about this and less predictable. Animals known to use this clay lick included peccaries, deer, agouti and tapir. On arrival you will settle down to observe the spot quietly from a distance and hope to be rewarded. On the way to and from the clay lick your guide will be looking out for other birds, animals and plant species of interest. After lunch you head to a local farm to see how native families cultivate the land. Depending on the season you may see crops such as cacao, banana, breadfruit, noni and lime. You’ll also learn how the indigenous people use the plant life for traditional remedies. Afterwards meet local families; spending time with them to learn about their customs, how they hunt and fish using traditional methods.

Please note: The order and variety of excursions available may vary dependent upon where you are staying and availability.

Booking a Single Room

All of our group tours are planned and operated on a twin-share basis, meaning that the standard cost is based either on individual travellers sharing accommodation with another group member of the same sex, or people who book together sharing accommodation. Please refer to the tour notes where the single room option availability is detailed on a night by night basis for this tour, and the price for the available nights is detailed on the dates & prices tab by departure date. For Self-Guided trips the Single Room supplement offers the option of a single room each and is charged per person. The Single Room supplement also applies to the third person in a party of three that will be accommodated in a single room.

Standard
Light on your pocket but long on authentic experiences, these tours are based in simple, sometimes local-style accommodation. If your idea of adventure travel is to experience real, everyday life then you will enjoy our Standard style of tour. You will have the chance to stay at simple, family-run hotels and guesthouses where the lack of luxury is more than compensated for by the warm welcome and genuine insight into local life.

Nape Lodge
Nape Lodge is just inland from the banks of the Tambopata River adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve. A small jungle lodge run by an indigenous community, the property offers simple accommodation with en suite with a cold (lukewarm) water shower, mosquito nets and safety box. There is a large communal dining area. Profits from the lodge go back into the community and help fund further education for students, build local schools and provide support for the elderly.

Premium
On Premium level tailor-made tours you will stay at comfortable mid-range hotels, chosen for their location, ambiance or local character. Your rooms will be clean and well-appointed, with en suite bathrooms and air-conditioning or heating as necessary. Premium level hotels normally have restaurants, bars and often other amenities such as a swimming pool and gardens, offering a good level of comfort at a reasonable price.

Corto Maltes Lodge
Located on the right margin of the Madre de Dios River, the Corto Maltes lodge has simple yet comfortable bungalows, all with a terrace where guests can relax in the hammocks. There is a bar including free hot drinks, a dining room overlooking the river and a craft shop. The lodge also has a swimming pool with bar, perfect for cooling-off when not watching the wildlife within the gardens.

Indulge
If you are looking for the best of both worlds, with adventurous days and indulgent nights, our Indulge level tailor-made tours may be just the answer. On these tours you can enjoy busy days packed with adventure and activity, followed by relaxing evenings unwinding in the comfort of accommodation hand-picked for its high level of comfort and service. Some hotels are full of historical interest too: a converted palace in India for example, or a restored colonial mansion in Latin America.

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion
Hacienda Concepcion is a lovely property located on the right bank of the Madre de Dios River, adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve, situated in 819 hectares of rainforest. The property offers private luxury cabinas and rooms with shared balcony within the main building. All rooms have hot water, ceiling fan and comfortable furnishings. Hacienda Concepcion has a large dining area with bar, while the upper floor has a scenic lounge. If you are looking for something special it is possible to arrange cooking classes and private cocktails by the river (extra cost).
