Day 1 - Fly to Tanzania

Depart the UK for your flight to Tanzania.

Day 2 - Arrive in Tanzania

Arrive at Kilimanjaro and transfer to Mtu Wambu, the small village just outside Manyara National Park.  This morning has been left free, you may choose to relax or go for a walk around the local village. This afternoon you have a game drive around this small but very diverse park.  The various habitats of the lush forests, the acacia woodlands, the grassy floodplain, the alkaline lake surface and the volcanic peaks are home to prey and predators large and small as well as over 400 species of birds.

Day 3 - Drive to Serengeti

Departing Manyara you transfer passed the crater to Serengeti National Park, where you will have a game drive en route to your camp site. After lunch and setting up camp, you have an afternoon game drive in search of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffe and buffalo.

Day 4 - Serengeti National Park

Serengeti is the Masai name that means the “endless grass plains” and the following two days are spent exploring this vast park. Visually striking, the park stretches as far as the eye can see over rocky kopjes and grassy savannah plains.  Time your trip right and you may be able to witness one of nature’s greatest sights as the migration passes through the park.

Day 5 - Game drives in the Serengeti

Your second day in this world-renowned park will be spent in search of the Big Five - lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros - as well as wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and hyenas.

Day 6 - Drive to Ngorongoro Crater

Departing the Serengeti you transfer to Ngorongoro Crater where you will have a game drive en route to your camp site. This afternoon has been left free for you to relax at the camp, you may wish to take a visit to Olduvai Gorge where Dr Leakey discovered a 1.75 million year old almost intact human skull

Day 7 - Ngorongoro Crater

Today you descend the crater for a full day game drive of the crater floor. The endangered black rhino can be seen here along with a host of other big game, including lion who are at their most active before the heat of the day takes hold.

Day 8 - Drive to Tarangire National Park

This morning your journey continues to Tarangire National Park with a game drive en route.  The national park derives its name from the Tarangire River that flows through the length of the park , this afternoon you may take an optional trek along the river bank and visit the local people.

Head back to Arusha in time for your night flight home.

Climate

The climate is tropical but varies greatly with altitude. Coastal areas are hot and humid, the central plateau dry and arid. It can be cold at night, particularly in June & July and at altitude. Generally the long rains arrive April/May and the short rains Nov/early Dec. Although this pattern can be completely erratic. Booking a Single Room

All of our group tours are planned and operated on a twin-share basis, meaning that the standard cost is based either on individual travellers sharing accommodation with another group member of the same sex, or people who book together sharing accommodation. Please refer to the tour notes where the single room option availability is detailed on a night by night basis for this tour, and the price for the available nights is detailed on the dates & prices tab by departure date. For Self-Guided trips the Single Room supplement offers the option of a single room each and is charged per person. The Single Room supplement also applies to the third person in a party of three that will be accommodated in a single room.


Standard
Light on your pocket but long on standard experiences, these tours are based in simple, sometimes local-style accommodation. If your idea of adventure travel is to experience real, everyday life then you will enjoy our Simple style of tour. You will have the chance to stay at simple, family-run hotels and guesthouses where the lack of luxury is more than compensated for by the warm welcome and genuine insight into local life.

Twiga Campsite
Twiga Campsite is located a short distance from Lake Manyara National Park, close to Mto wa Mbu village. Facilities include a small bar and restaurant, and covered cooking and dining areas. There are also several en suite huts at the site. You will be sleeping in two man tents and some level of camp participation may be required.

Central Serengeti Campsite
Central Serengeti Campsite is a basic campsite, facilities include a cooking area and shared shower and toilets blocks. You will be sleeping in 2-man tents and some level of participation around camp may be required. Bedding is provided.

Simba Campsite
Simba Campsite is a large and simple site overlooking the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater with superb views. Facilities include covered cooking areas, showers and toilet blocks. You will be sleeping in two man tents and some level of participation around camp may be required.

Tarangire Camp
Tarangire Camp is located just outside the park and offers  covered cooking areas, showers and toilet blocks. You will be sleeping in two man tents and some level of participation around camp may be required.  Bedding is provided.

Booking a land only package with Explore

Customers who have chosen to book on the ‘Land Only’ arrangements of our tour, please ensure that you have checked your tour specific ‘Joining Instructions’ prior to booking your own travel arrangements. Your joining instructions can be found below in the dates and prices information. 

You may also be eligible for the Free Explore Transfer.


Joining Tour Abroad

Customers booked on the ‘Land Only’ arrangements will now receive a Free Transfer, provided you arrive and depart on the tour only itinerary start and end dates. The transfers will be from the Explore designated airport or train station to the joining point of your tour, and then back from the ending point to the designated airport or train station. The exception to this rule is customers who are booked on a tour where the joining and ending point is at the designated airport or train station.  

Free transfers are not available for Self-Guided, Tailormade or Tours for Churches customers.

If you are not eligible for the Free Transfer then you will need to make your own way through to the joining and ending point. On a majority of our tours Explore will be able to provide a private transfer at an additional cost. Please ask for a quote at the time of booking.

Insurance

It is a condition of booking with Explore that you have adequate valid travel insurance. It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate travel insurance and ensure you have read and understood the full terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy to ensure that you are covered for all activities you intend to undertake whilst on the tour, including all optional activities. Your Insurance Policy must fully cover you for medical expenses and emergency repatriation to your home country. Please ensure your policy includes medical emergency helicopter evacuation in the event of illness or injury and covers the entire duration of your holiday. If you are trekking at altitude please ensure that there is no upper altitude limit which may limit or exclude cover for your trip. Medical and repatriation insurance cover is not mandatory for UK residents who are travelling on trips within the United Kingdom.

You are able to book this tour on a 'land only' basis or as a ‘flight inclusive’ package. Your flight inclusive package will be fully protected by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) ATOL protection scheme.

On our website we display a UK flight inclusive package guide price which is generally based on a London departure. To avoid paying supplements or to secure your preferred flight option, we recommend booking as early as possible, especially for peak travel dates.

Vaccinations

We strongly recommend protection against malaria, hepatitis A, tetanus, typhoid, polio and yellow fever. Please note you are required to produce a valid yellow fever certificate on arrival in Tanzania if you have spent 10 hours or more transiting through an endemic country. Consult your travel clinic for latest advice on different prophylaxis available against malaria. Travellers may also wish to take immunisation against meningococcal meningitis.
