HIGHLIGHTS: 1. Our trip leader, Arsen, asked our group what we wanted to do doing optional time, and he stayed with us and got us to many places. 2. Optional canal and river boat ride in St. Petersburgwas great. This should be included on every tour. 3. Local guides were very good.
TIPS: 1. We wanted to do optional concert and ballet outings and in spite of me calling Explore before tour and being told we could book them when we started tour, this was not true.
Everything was booked up, and many of us were disappointed. People need to be able to book these optionals before the tour. 2. The Metro stations tour in Moscow was disappointing. It needs to include more than three stations and include some of the most unusual. 3. The group tour needs to start before 9:30 or 10:00 AM so we can do more during the day.

The tour did what it said on the tin but possibly there was a surfeit of cathedrals - beautiful as they undoubtedly all are - but in each monastery in the Golden Ring there do tend to be on average 5 or 6. However, this is just a personal observation about one small aspect of the whole tour. Overall it was excellent. The Armoury in the Kremlin was an unforgettable experience as was the Hermitage in St Petersburg. Our tour guide (Dr Arsen Faradzhev) was first rate, knowledgeable, good fun and with an excellent line in jokes and witty one-liners. At the start of any free-time period he always stated that if the group had any place they would like to visit then he would come with us and organise everything. This was very much appreciated and in this way we he organised trips for - and accompanied us to - the likes of St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow and the Summer Palace in St Petersburg. When we were unavoidably delayed and missed the Volga boat trip he swiftly organised a replacement trip on the Neva for when we arrived in St Petersburg. He commented after that trip that the Neva boat ride had been a better one than the one on the Volga would have been and said that he would request Explore to substitute this boat trip for the Volga one. We would wholeheartedly support this. Explore have once again delivered an excellent holiday for us and we are already planning our next. One small request; could we have Arsen as our guide? At one point our tour leader was giving a commentary to the person behind while the local guide was speaking at the front of the 'bus.
Our tour guide said he did not have a copy of our tour and took a copy from one of the group!
I have never experienced being not approved of by a tour guide before, and received an apology from him right at the end of the holiday.

The trip was excellent a slight problem ensuring we met up with the group at the beginning. Would be worth adding optional visit to Bolshoi (difficult to book) and Faberge Museum

Well organized, a lot of free time, more so than other trips I have been on previously. The tour guide wasn't with us 24/7 in Moscow.
Disappointed in the "age range" of group. Everyone seemed to go off and do there own thing, so if you went to meet people specifically you would have left disappointed.
Highlights was Kremlin/Red Square, Suzdal and of course St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is a beautiful city.
The overnight train to St. Petersburg took 14.5 hours, which is far too long. On arrival we had a quick lunch and then city tour. Therefore you really lost a day in St. Petersburg arriving in the afternoon. Maybe you should consider getting the earlier train at 7.30 p.m. arriving St. Petersburg at 6.30 a.m., have breakfast then city tour. At least in the afternoon people would have a choice to rest or go sightseeing and therefore feel that you haven't lost a day. Alternatively add an extra day to the trip to accommodate the shortfall. Two days in St. Petersburg is not enough

Enjoyed most aspects of this. Good way round to do it, may have been disappointed with Moscow if done last. Liked seeing some of the countryside on the Golden Ring. Guides and drivers helpful. Busy cos height of season, but queues not too long. Hermitage was fine, would have liked longer there but too much to see, could have done without too much emphasis on Rembrandt and Da Vinci. Enough time on own.
Others on trip were fine, there was the serial complainer and the two who were always late

Excellent locations, great to see Golden Ring towns and superb accommodation. Would have liked a bit longer in Moscow, otherwise no criticisms. Tour leader Nikolay worked hard for us from start to finish and did a great job overall.

There are few trips to choose between in Russia and most focus on Moscow and St Petersburg so this was a slightly longer trip adding in the Golden Ring. Tour guides focussed very much on the Tsars. I would have liked to have had a broader experience of Russia. We spent additional time after the trip ended in St Petersburg which allowed us to attend the Museum of Political History which was incredible, bringing together footage and artefacts from 1800 to the present day. Don't miss this. I've suggested it be part of the main tour. Russia is truly stunning. Supplement the church focus with your own broader reading if you can.
