MEETING THE FRIENDLY BURMESE PEOPLE, SAMPLING THE CHEAP AND LOVELY FOOD. PERFECT WEATHER AT CHRISTMAS! VISITING THE AKHA VILLAGES AND THOSE AROUND INLE LAKE. SEEING THE MARVELLOUS PAGODAS , TEMPLES AND MONASTERIES. HOWEVER THE TREK TO THE GOLDEN ROCK ON DAY 2 IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. IF YOU HAVE JUST ARRIVED IN THE COUNTRY THE DAY BEFORE YOU ARE PROBABLY JET LAGGED AND UNUSED TO THE HEAT. WE WENT UP TO THE MOUNTAIN BY TRUCK AND CAME DOWN BY TRUCK. AS THIS WAS ADVERTISED AS A TREKKING HOLIDAY I THINK THE GOLDEN ROCK TREK SHOULD BE AT THE END NOT THE BEGINNING. DAY12 WAS MUCH SHORTER THAN ADVERTISED. THE OPTIONAL EXCURSION TO POPA MOUNTAIN FROM BAGAN IS NOT WORTH THE EXPENSE.

Bagan was the most exciting Bhuddist area.
My favourite days were those walking through rural areas, with lunch provided in a local home. Hiking around the villages of Ho Kyin was outstanding.

Be friendly with the local people. They are a delight.

The trip provides a rare chance to head off the beaten track in a country that is opening up to tourists all the time. It is a great chance to meet ordinary people. However, don't underestimate the treks, especially the hike to the Golden Rock on the first full day where you are battling jet lag, midday heat and a 12km climb up a very steep trail. Carry the absolute bare minimum for this!
