What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

I loved every second of the trip, but two things really stood out. The first was seeing Glacier Grey from the John Gardner pass - it's a long trek over the pass, but the view of the glacier disappearing into the distance was completely worth the tired legs. The second highlight was seeing the Torres on the final day - what an amazing way to finish an incredible trek.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Nothing was too much trouble for Chino, and his local knowledge and thoughtfulness really helped to make this trip so fantastic. Both he and our other guide Filipe are incredibly knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and geography of the region and constantly pointed little details out to us I otherwise probably would have missed.

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

The last day of the trek was to ‘Mirador Las Torres’, it just happened to be ‘New Years Day’ This was to be the ‘cream on the cake’ the weather was so unpredictable we would either get the view of a lifetime or nothing, so no pressure!!! The morning after a gentle New Years Eve celebration, we left in cloud heading up towards Refugio El Chileno, passed Chileno still no change, there were trekkers already descending they had missed out on clear sunrise. As we ascended the moraine dam towards the Mirador there was a hint of Blue, our hearts leapt. There was a slim chance that we would get ‘The View’. Nothing quite prepared us for the next few steps; you have this sense that there is something very big just behind a veiled curtain. The wind shifted slightly and we witnessed ‘The Prestige’ as magicians would call it. The sudden reveal was a spectacular of nature. For a weather window of 20min we sat in awe, almost forgetting to take pictures. We had been very fortunate.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

The adventure started in fine style with a very informative tour of Buenos Aires, great to be able to see the more curious parts as well as the highlights of this incredibly vibrant city. Chino rounded off the day with a superb Beef meal at a local restaurant. Never tasted a better steak. I‘m a mountain guide/climbing instructor myself in the UK, and can fully appreciate the fantastic efforts of our fabulous Explore Trek Guide, Ramiro (Chino). Chino looked after us, ensuring sure we got our meals on time in the hectic Refuges. He knew the best places to eat & drink locally, great value and extremely tasty. He Local knowledge is everything; Chino knew the trail well and could point the best and most elusive of the flora and wildlife. In the event of bad weather Chino our Explore guide not only had a contingency plan B, but also a plan C & D.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

From Seron the hike to the Dickinson Refuge is approx 19k, if you though of bringing trainers for this section and beyond you’ll have made a big mistake, although the gradient is quite gentle the last leg is swampy with plently of oppertunities to take a mud bath. Wear a decent pair of lightweight waterproof boots. The terrain is varied, as for the weather, you’re likely to witness not just 4 seasons in one day, but probably every hour. The trek was demanding but well paced with the right amount of rest days. We had a great trip and will certainly look to use Explore again. Fitzroy looks good….

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

Be prepared. The weather always plays a major part in any trek, due to blizzard conditions on the Pass and deep fresh snow, we witnessed successive groups of trekkers struggle back into camp after failing to cross the John Gardner. We hoped that the weather would turn for the better. I woke in the morning hoping to see the pressure creeping up on my barometer. It wasn’t! There was a slight improvement after lunch, so we packed ready to head on up to Perros Camp. Next Day Chino and our Chilean Mountain Guide Felipe, made the decision to ‘go for it’, it was a good call. The first hour was spent forcing through the muddied and flooded trail up through the forest to the edge of the tree line. Almost level with the top of the pass, the full force of the glacial winds slammed us down onto our trekking poles, we crossed the col of John Gardner somewhat erratically, a few meters below the crest the wind eased off and we were stunned by the breathtaking expanse of Glaciar Grey.

It was probably coming over the Gardner Pass and seeing Glacier Grey stretching out in front of us. Definitely worth the considerable effort to get up to the pass and a view I'll never forget.

Great. Encouraging and supportive, particularly as my passport, money etc we're stolen on the first day in Buenos Aires. He was calm, helpful and encouraging.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

It was all absolutely stunning but probably the 9th day did it for me. You see some of the most amazing mountains, with incredible shapes and colours. We had lunch in front of snow capped mountains listening to the loud 'booms' as avalanches fell (don't worry they're all v far away!). An amazing day!
